L'Inferno took over three years to make, and was the first full-length Italian feature film ever made. (The Story of the Kelly Gang, released in Australia in 1906 is the first full-length film).
L'Inferno was first screened in Naples in the Teatro Mercadante on March 10, 1911. An international success, it took in more than $2 million in the United States alone, where its length gave theater owners an excuse for raising ticket prices. For this reason, L'Inferno was arguably the first true blockbuster in all of cinema. Today it is regarded by many scholars and fans as the finest film adaptation of any of Dante's works to date.
Synopsis
Inspiré des illustrations de Gustave Doré, le film a été restauré. A cette occasion, le groupe Tangerine Dream a composé une nouvelle musique de film. Dans le film, Dante, accompagné par le poète, Virgile l'enfer et le purgatoire visite. L'iconographie développée par des cinéastes est basée sur des illustrations de Gustave Doré pour une édition du poème, la création d'un film plein de démons, des bêtes, le feu et de soufre, où Dante et Virgile sont de trouver un grand nombre de caractères dans l'histoire du monde et de ses contemporains. Pour ceux qui connaissent le film de Pier Paolo Pasolini, va réaliser les nombreuses références qui fait de ce film de 1911.Actors

In 500 A.D., Hrothgar, king of Denmark, and a group of warriors chase a large and burly man, whom they consider a troll, and his young son, to the edge of deep cliff. The father directs his young son, Grendel, to hide from the attackers' view; whereupon The Danes shoot the father dead, and his dead body plunges onto the beach far below. The Danish king sees the young Grendel, but spares him. Later, Grendel finds his father's body and cuts the head off to take it home. Many years later, the severed (and mummified) head is inside a cave where the boy Grendel has become as large and powerful as his father, and plans revenge.

Jim Carter, a former stoker, takes over a fairground show, run by 'Pop' McWade, which depicts scenes from Dante's Inferno. He marries Pop's niece Betty and they have a son, Alexander. Meanwhile the show becomes a great success, with Carter making it larger and more lurid. An inspector declares the fair unsafe but Carter bribes him into silence. There is a partial collapse at the fair which injures Pop. Recovering in hospital, he admonishes Carter and we see a lengthy vision of the Inferno. Undeterred, Carter establishes a new venture with an unsafe floating casino, only for disaster to strike again at sea.

The setting is a post-industrial castle that defends the border of an unnamed kingdom. It is terrorized by a demon named Grendel, who kills the castle's defenders, one by one.
