Dastan or Dastaan is a 1950 Bollywood drama film directed by Abdul Rashid Kardar. A box-office success, the film became the third highest earning film of 1950, earning an approximate gross of Rs. 1,15,00,000 and net gross of Rs. 65,00,000 . The film starred Raj Kapoor, Suraiya, Veena, Suresh, Al Nasir, Murad and Shakila.

The story, a tragic melodrama, was a narrative in flashback. It was inspired from the film Enchantment (1948) directed by Irving Reis. Cited as "one of the biggest commercial hits" by Patel, Suraiya's acting was stated to have "over-shadowed" that of Raj Kapoor.

Kamini (Peace Kanwal) and Asha (Shyama) are two sisters living with their wealthy father, Seth Hirachand (Diwan Sharar). Mohan (Talat Mehmood), is striving to become a musician, but is hindered by his father who is a petition-writer. Mohan leaves home and meets up with Kamini and her father. After a few years, Kamini and Mohan are brought together by Mohan's son, who insists on calling Kamini, mother.

Poornima (Naaz), a young orphan girl stays with her Aunt Shankri in a village called Neecha Nagar, at the foothills of Pawan Ghat. Her grandfather, Chacha Sagar (Bipin Gupta), whom she rarely meets, lives a lonely existence atop the hill in a cottage. Shankri is a greedy conniving woman, and instead of having to take care of Poonima, she leaves her with her grandfather. Here Poornima meets a young goatherd, Jaggu (Romi), who brings his goats for grazing every day and returns to his blind mother (Pratima Devi) in Neecha Nagar at sunset. Jaggu and Poornima become friends and develop a close bond. Shankri enters Poornima's life again, as she intends to put her in service so she can earn money. In spite of her grandfather objecting, Shankri puts Poornima to work in Seth Girja Shankar's (Ulhas) house in the city.
