Dau is a Russian film directed by Ilya Khrzhanovsky. The film deals with the life of the Nobel Prize winning Soviet scientist Lev Landau. The movie is one of Russia's largest and most controversial cinematic projects.

The preparation for the shooting for the film began in 2006, whereas the actual shooting started in 2008 and went on for three years. The world premiere of the movie was intended to take place at the 2012 Cannes Film Festival but was rescheduled to L’Atelier du Festival at Cannes in May 2014. As of 2015 it is still in post-production.

The film was shot at various sites in Russia, Ukraine, Germany, United Kingdom and Denmark. Most of the film was shot on a specially constructed set called The Institute in Kharkiv in northeastern Ukraine. The Institute was the largest film set in Europe, the area totalling 12,000 sq. meters. The set was a dynamic creative reconstruction of a Soviet restricted-access Institute in 1938-1968, located in Moscow. The destruction of the set became an integral part of the story and was shot on 8 November 2011. Teodor Currentzis, a Greek classical conductor plays the title role of Dau while Radmila Shchegoleva, the only professional actor in the cast plays his wife.

Meat merchant Oleg, prostitute Marina, and piano tuner "simply Volodya" drop into an all-night bar in Moscow, where they are served by a narcoleptic bartender (three plus one is four) while each regales the others with made-up biographies. Oleg claims to work in President Putin's administration, supplying him with bottled water and his wife with liquor; Marina passes herself off as a marketing executive; and Volodya, the infamous lead singer of the rock group Leningrad, as a geneticist who clones twins (two times two makes four, again) in a laboratory that has been engaged in these experiments since the days of Stalin. After they separate, these fantasy realities, especially Volodya's, begin to dominate their everyday lives.

XVI siècle. Genichiro et sa sœur Shinobu désirent venger leur père tué par le clan des Samoto. Ils s'adressent au célèbre sabreur Musashi Miyamoto. Engagé auprès d'un autre clan, celui-ci ne peut, d'emblée, satisfaire leur requête. Il leur explique, aussi, que les arts martiaux ne sont pas destinés à satisfaire un désir de vengeance ou de simples besoins matériels. Ils font partie intégrante d'un apprentissage spirituel conduisant sur la voie de la sagesse. Il accepte, pourtant, de leur enseigner son savoir et de les entraîner en conséquence. Quelque temps plus tard, Genichiro meurt au combat face à un autre grand duelliste, Kojirō Sasaki. Ce dernier défie, en même temps, Miyamoto qui, touché dans son honneur, n'a plus qu'une pensée : affronter son adversaire afin d'établir sa suprématie.

The film opens in 1950, five years after the capture of Puyi by the Red Army when the Soviet Union entered the Pacific War in 1945 and his having been kept in their custody. Soon after his arrival, Puyi attempts suicide, which only renders him unconscious.

Following a news story depicting the demolition of a slum in East London, South Africa, journalist Donald Woods (Kevin Kline) seeks more information about the incident and ventures off to meet black activist Steve Biko (Denzel Washington). Biko has been officially banned by the South African government and is not permitted to leave his defined banning area at King William's Town. Woods is formally against Biko's banning, but remains critical of his political views. Biko invites Woods to visit a black township to see the impoverished conditions and to witness the effect of the government-imposed restrictions, which make up the apartheid system. Woods begins to agree with Biko's desire for a South Africa where blacks have the same opportunities and freedoms as those enjoyed by the white population. As Woods comes to understand Biko's point of view, a friendship slowly develops between them.

Jirozaemon est un riche et honnête fabricant de soie qui avait été abandonné à la naissance par une famille inconnue mais sans doute aisée. Il est affecté d'une cicatrice au visage dont l'extrême laideur fait fuir les femmes. Comme il souhaite une épouse coûte que coûte, des clients lui arrangent des rencontres : en vain. Ils décident un jour de distraire le malheureux en l'emmenant à Yoshiwara, le quartier des plaisirs de Edo (ancien nom de Tokyo). Là-bas, même les geishas ne veulent pas lui tenir compagnie. Seule Tamatsuru, une prostituée de bas-étage sortant de prison et décidée à monter dans la hiérarchie sociale, accepte la compagnie du « monstre ». Celui-ci s'en émeut. Elle lui promet le mariage s'il l'aide à devenir « première courtisane ». Jirozaemon se ruine pour elle, à un moment où son entreprise traverse une mauvaise passe, avant de réaliser que le tout Yoshiwara s'est moqué de lui.
