The story is loosely based on a 1926 short story by Jun'ichirō Tanizaki, published in Chūōkōron in September 1926. The film opens as an artist and a young woman are in a dentist's waiting room. Though he is attracted to the woman, he says nothing to her. They are later in the same examining room. When the artist is given an anaesthetic, he begins to imagine a series of scenes in which the woman undergoes various forms of sexual abuse at the hand of the dentist, including rape and torture. When the artist recovers from the anaesthetic, he finds bite marks on the woman's breast, indicating that he may not have been hallucinating.

Onimata Kan (Tarō Suwa) is a middle-aged writer of BDSM literature fame and he hosts in a Tokyo Bay houseboat named the "Slave Ship" swinger-style BDSM parties attended by couples. When he pays a visit to the Umezu onsen owned by a couple who are frequenters of the Slave Ship, he learns that the elderly wife Kikue (Kyōko Aizome) has moved to a mental institution. Her husband Zenzaburō claims that she is suffering due to abnormal interest of Kazuo Kitagawa, a married young admirer attending the Slave Ship parties. Onimata Kan is intrigued and finds Kitagawa, learning from him the intimate aspects of his dangerous liaison with Kikue.

"The Black Hair" (黒髪, Kurokami) was adapted from "The Reconciliation", which appeared in Hearn's collection Shadowings (1900). An impoverished swordsman living in Kyoto divorces his wife, a weaver, for a woman of a wealthy family to attain greater social status. He takes his new wife to his new position as a district governor. However, the swordsman's second marriage proves to be unhappy. His second wife being callous and shallow, the swordsman regrets leaving his more devoted ex-wife.

At the start of the movie, the young and handsome Kanō Sōzaburō (Ryuhei Matsuda) is admitted to the Shinsengumi, an elite samurai group led by Kondō Isami (Yoichi Sai) that seeks to defend the Tokugawa shogunate against reformist forces.
