The film is dedicated to the memory of Mohammed Rafi who sang the film's title song and actor Uttam Kumar, both of whom died two years before the film was released. This was the only film for which music director Laxmikant was also a playback singer for one song. The film became an "Average" at the box office because Amitabh Bachchan was the most popular actor of the time, however both critically and commercially, it failed to re-create the magic of previous Amitabh-Manmohan Desai films.
Synopsis
Master Dinanth (Amitabh Bachchan) is a freedom fighter and participated in the war against the British in 1942 and independence was eventually won in 1947. But after independence, the people's love for their country seems to be diminishing and they are too busy betraying it like ex British landlord Thakur Pratab Singh (Amjad Khan). Master Dinanth finds out about Thakur Pratab Singh's illegal activities such as smuggling of weapons and ammunition and gets him arrested. In revenge for putting him in prison, Pratab Singh gets Master Dinnanth's wife Bharati (Sharmila Tagore) and daughter Priti (Parveen Babi) kidnapped by Thakur's partner in crime Sher Singh (Kader Khan) to try to change his ways but to no avail. Thakur also provokes an attack on Masterji's home by the local villagers who accuse Dinanath of betraying his country and he is forced to flee his home with his young son Raju. His wife becomes a victim of leprosy and escapes from Sher Singh, leaving her daughter Priti in a friend's care. Masterji is informed that his wife and daughter could be dead as they find a necklace of hers near the train tracks. Masterji is devastated by his wife and daughter's loss and he and his son move on with their life.Actors

Vijay (Amitabh Bachchan) and Sunil (Shashi Kapoor) are petty burglars. They don't go well with each other and are sworn enemies. Their respective bosses command them to go to a school where their task is to abduct a rich man Seth Mathur's (Shreeram Lagoo) son, Bittoo and bring him in so as to demand a huge ransom. Vijay and Sunil fake their identities and join the school as Ram and Lakshman, respectively. Ram is appointed as a P.E. instructor while Lakshman is made the music teacher. On their journey towards the task, Ram meets Anju (Parveen Babi) the principal's daughter while Lakshman meets Shalu (Hema Malini) the dance teacher. Both the ladies, unaware of their background and motive, fall in love.

In the small village of Ramgarh, the retired policeman Thakur Baldev Singh (Sanjeev Kumar) summons a pair of small-time thieves that he had once arrested. Vikram Singh (Amjad Khan) is framed for possession of drugs but claims he was framed by a business associate named Rajan (Sujit Kumar). After release from prison he kills Rajan and frames his former lawyer Amit (Amitabh Bachchan). Amit is forced to go on the run while his pregnant wife Janki (Waheeda Rehman) gives birth to twin sons Guru and Shankar (Both played by Amitabh Bachchan). Unfortunately she becomes separated from one of her sons Guru when her son is stolen by a barren couple. With her husband on the run and one son missing, Janki is forced to raise Shankar on her own. Amit thinks his wife Janki is dead so tries to lead a normal life using the name Rana Ranveer and living with his adopted daughter Manju (Parveen Babi). But Janki is living in another city with Shankar who has become a police inspector. Guru had been brought up by a barren couple and grows up to be a theatre actor and pursued by Rita (Zeenat Aman). Manju meets and falls in love with Shankar, unaware that he is Rana Ranveer's long lost son. At the end their lives interwine and all are reunited and become a family again.

Shankar's (Amitabh Bachchan) father, who is a village temple priest is murdered by Tiger (Amjad Khan). His mother and sister are torched in their house. After his father, mother and sister are killed, Shankar decides to bring justice by himself and goes to the palace of Tiger. Instead of killing Tiger, Shankar blinds him. Shankar blames God for doing nothing and grows up as a Nastik (atheist). Shankar flees to the city and becomes a thief. He joins forces with Balbir (Pran) and Gauri (Hema Malini). At one time, he is shot by Tiger for stealing his goods. In an attempt to hide, he finds his mother, who he thought was dead in the fire. In a rude awakening, he decides to stop stealing and join with his long lost family. Incidentally, Balbir saves Shankar's sister Shanti (Rita Bhaduri), who is chased by Tiger's men when she goes outside to bring medicine for her mother. Shankar reunites with his long lost mother and sister. Shankar finds out from his sister that the enemy who he thought had killed, is actually alive. He decides to finish him off once and for all.

Kaalia (Amitabh Bachchan) lives with his older brother (Kadar Khan), sister-in-law (Asha Parekh), and their little daughter. He spends his time idly playing with the neighbour's kids. His older brother gets into accident at work at the mill and loses his arms. He loses his job and needs money for treatment. Kaalia begs his brother's boss (Amjad Khan), but he refuses. Kaalia breaks into the boss' safe to get the money but it's too late as the brother dies. The boss throws Kaalia in jail for nine months. This is where he meets the men that teach him crime (kallu se kalia ka safar shuro hota hai). After his release, Kaalia is a different, stronger man. He and his accomplices steal the gold that the boss had been smuggling at the mill. Then he burns down the mill as retribution for his brother's death. He goes to jail again, this time for 2 years. His accomplices lie to his sister-in-law by telling her that he is in America earning a lot of money for her and her daughter. They move from poverty into riches. In jail, Kaalia meets the warden (Pran), a smart, ethical, strong man, whose daughter was kidnapped by one of the prisoners when she was little. After Kaalia is released from prison, he is bent on seeking vengeance and eventually pairs up with a woman (Parveen Babi). The boss kidnaps Kaalia's niece and forces her mother to testify against Kaalia in a murder trial. He is found guilty for a murder he didn't commit and escapes from prison to find his niece. At first, the warden chases him and once he knows the true story, decides to help him. They go to the boss's place and not only find the little girl but also the sister-in-law about to die. The boss reveals to the warden that he was the one who had kidnapped his daughter 20 years ago and now it's the grown up Parveen Babi's character. They fight with him and the boss gets beaten up badly. Everyone lives happily after.

An orphan boy begins working in the house of a wealthy man named Ramnath (Shreeram Lagoo). Ramnath does not like him. It is later revealed that another orphan had killed his wife, hence his animosity. Ramnath's young daughter Kaamna, however, empathizes with the boy and they form a friendship. Eventually, the boy is adopted by a Muslim woman named Fatima (Nirupa Roy) who also works for Ramnath, and who names him Sikandar (meaning: Conqueror.) On the occasion of Kaamna's birthday, Sikandar is refused entry to the party, and when he breaks into Kaamna's room to deliver her gift he is caught and accused of trying to rob the house. He and his mother are banished from Ramnath's home. Shortly thereafter, Fatima dies, leaving young Sikandar with the responsibility of looking after her daughter, Mehroo. A fakir, Darvesh Baba (Kader Khan) advises the mourning Sikandar to embrace the woes of life and find happiness in sadness, for then he would become the conqueror of fate.

Raj Kumar Gupta (Sanjeev Kumar) gives up his first love Shanti (Waheeda Rehman) to marry a wealthy heiress Kamini (Gita Siddharth) who is the daughter of Seth Dindayal. Shanti comes by to wish him success on his marriage with the news that she is carrying his child and moving away. She gives birth to a boy and names him Vijay. She raises him to adulthood. After she dies, Vijay (Amitabh Bachchan) comes to Delhi to take revenge by destroying his father's business and family connections. Shekhar (Shashi Kapoor) and Kusum (Poonam Dhillon) are Vijay's half-siblings who are caught in the crossfire of Vijay's revenge. Vijay also crosses paths with Geeta (Raakhee), the devoted secretary of Gupta and another company's general manager Sheetal (Hema Malini) who is also the daughter of the owner of the company. When Geeta is fired Vijay hires her. He tries to create differences between Shekhar and Sheetal. Vijay also takes all the good deals which resulted in losses for Raj. He even encourages Kusum to marry Ravi (Sachin) against her father's wishes which enrages Shekhar and he ends up fighting with Vijay. But Geeta comes and tells the truth. Shekhar and Kusum leave Raj. Raj in anger tells Balwant (Prem Chopra) to kill Vijay. Later Vijay comes down and tells him that he is Raj's son and leaves. Raj tries to stop Balwant but he had already left and kidnapped Ravi in order to get to Vijay. Vijay, with the assistance of Shekhar and Raj, rescues Ravi. Balwant aims at Vijay but Raj comes in between and thus Raj is shot in the process by Balwant. Before dying Raj asks for forgiveness. Vijay forgives him and unites with the family. In addition, Vijay changes the name of his company from Shanti Constructions to Shanti-Raj Constructions.

Vijay Pal Singh (Amitabh Bachchan) is a disgraced Merchant Navy captain who is branded a coward, humiliated by society and disowned by his parents for abandoning his ship risking the lives of over 300 passengers (perhaps inspired by Joseph Conrad's Lord Jim). Feeling guilty over his cowardice and with low self-esteem, he starts working as a coal miner to forget his past. He meets and becomes friends with Ravi (Shashi Kapoor), an engineer in charge of the mine. He also makes an enemy in another co-worker named Mangal (Shatrughan Sinha) who is an escaped criminal working in the mine to avoid the police. Vijay's past comes to haunt him as he sees Mangal causing trouble for the coal miners and angry over his cowardice over what happened when he was in the navy, Vijay tries to defend the miners against Mangal. Ravi eventually gets Vijay and Mangal to be friends after circumstances surrounding the mine force Mangal to change himself. The one person who supports Vijay him in his life is Dr Sudha Sen (Raakhee Gulzar) who tries to make Vijay face up to his past and move on. Ravi and Mangal also get involved in their own romances with Anita (Parveen Babi) and Channo (Neetu Singh), respectively.
