Add to a movie listThe Missing Wife (German:Die verschwundene Frau) is a 1929 Austrian silent film comedy crime film directed by Karl Leiter and starring Harry Halm, Iris Arlan and Mary Kid. The sets were designed by the art director Hans Ledersteger.
The film is notable for marking the screen debut of Peter Lorre. The film was believed lost until 1984. It wasn't until it was restored in 1996 that Lorre's small role was noted. Lorre had never spoken about the film and always maintained that M (1931) was his first film, probably because it was a breakthrough role as opposed to a brief, uncredited cameo.

The young Count Georg Wolkersheim (Willy Fritsch) is sent to the Congress of Vienna to represent the interests of his country, Reuss-Schleiz-Greiz. Tensions arise between the count, his wife Melanie (Maria Holst), and their two chamberlains (Hans Moser and Theo Lingen), and when the four of them attend a court ball, Melanie leaves Georg, assumes the identity of a famous actress, and attracts the affections of Crown Prince Ludwig of Bavaria (Fred Liewehr). Georg quits the ball and returns to his lodgings to wait for his wife. Meanwhile, the two servants plot to further inflame Georg's jealousy by posing as Ludwig to commission a portrait of Melanie from the famous artist Moritz Daffinger (Egon von Jordan). The next day, however, Georg and Daffinger expose the servants' ruse, Ludwig reveals to Melanie that he has discovered her true identity, and all is forgiven.

Peu de gens connaissent le nom du peintre viennois Stefan Helmers. Sa petite amie, Anita Berger, est employée comme styliste dans l'élégante maison de couture de René Valentin. Un jour, Stefan reçoit étonnamment l'ordre de concevoir un vitrail dans la vieille église d'un petit village du Salzkammergut. Fou de joie, les deux jeunes partent. Le jeune Martin Hinterkirchner a quitté le village de Himmelsberg pour se rendre à Vienne, où il a obtenu un emploi de répétiteur à l'opéra. C'est une désillusion : le travail n'est qu'un poste d'assistant. Martin doit donc vivre chez l'ancienne chanteuse d’opéra Cäsarina Zwanziger et être son pianiste. Il écrit secrètement, soutenu par le fils de Cäsarina Peter, du schlager qu'il soumet au manager de musique Cobold. Surtout pour la chanson La Serenata qu'il a écrite pour la star schlager Linda Borg, mais elle est d'abord présentée à la manager de Linda, Isolde Fürchtenich, tombe dans la main, qui n'en veut pas. Martin est déçu et pense que Linda est maintenant une personne arrogante. Le grand-père de Martin, Leopold, qui arrive à l'exposition canine à Vienne avec son teckel Seppl, est impressionné par Linda. Quand le jury exclut Seppl au premier tour à cause de son pedigree manquant, c'est Linda qui fait l'éloge du "chien de race".
