Drei Unteroffiziere (Three Sergeants) is a 1939 German film.
Made soon before the outbreak of the Second World War, the film - as its name suggests - depicts the lives of three German army sergeants. While the plot concentrates on the soldier characters' complicated love affairs rather than their battlefield exploits, it does extol camaraderie among soldiers - a staple theme of Nazi propaganda. The film concludes with the protagonists overcoming amorous jealousies which threatened to divide them, and eagerly embarking on a dangerous military task. This theme is well reflected in the film's poster, in whose foreground the three in uniform face their commanding officer while on the background appears the actress Gerda for whose love they had competed with each other.
After the defeat of Nazi Germany, Drei Unteroffiziere was included in the list of forbidden films, and nowadays its screening is only allowed for "special educational purposes".

Une matinée d’août 1944 dans un village de France, les habitants célèbrent prématurément leur libération : la fête est interrompue par l’arrivée d’un détachement allemand harassé, sans chef. À quelques kilomètres de là, les habitants du village de Muzière parlementent avec les Allemands et décident d’une trêve. Mais l’arrivée d’un capitaine de la Wehrmacht, soucieux de reprendre les hommes en main, met fin à ce fragile processus de paix. Le capitaine propose d’aller à la rencontre des Américains pour capituler devant des troupes régulières plutôt que devant des civils. Les habitants de Muzière, croyant la trêve rompue, tirent sur les Allemands et, sur ce quiproquo, les armes se remettent à parler.

Stefan is a German student who has finished his mathematics studies and decides to have an adventure to rid himself of his inhibitions and discard his personal commitments. After hitch-hiking to Paris, he makes a friend playing cards in a bar and they decide to commit a burglary to get some money. He meets a free-spirited American girl called Estelle and follows her to Ibiza. He discovers Estelle is involved with an ex-Nazi German man called Dr. Wolf. Stefan saves Estelle from Dr. Wolf only to find she does not really want to be saved, and she introduces him to heroin (referred to by the old street name, "horse") which she has stolen from Dr. Wolf. Stefan is initially against Estelle using heroin, but having used it previously, she persuades him to try it. Soon Stefan and Estelle are both heavily addicted to heroin. They try to break the addiction using LSD and initially manage to stay clean. However, after a while they're both using heroin again. Unable to break free of the addiction, it quickly spirals out of control leading to a tragic end for Stefan.
