L’Excursion (grec moderne : H Εκδρομή, I Ekdromí) est un film grec réalisé par Takis Kannelopoulos et sorti en 1966. Il fut présenté au Festival du cinéma grec de Thessalonique cette même année. Il reçut le prix de meilleure image et une récompense d'honneur. L'Union des Critiques de cinéma d'Athènes lui accorda pour 1966 les prix de meilleure actrice et meilleure musique originale.

Synopsis

Dans une ville frontière d'un pays indéterminé mais en guerre, Irini ( Lily Papagianni), la femme du lieutenant Kostas (Angelos Antonopoulos) a une liaison avec un caporal ami de son mari, Stratos (Kostas Karagiorgis). Un jour, Kostas est gravement blessé. Stratos ment à Irini en lui apprenant la mort de son mari et en lui offrant de fuir avec lui. Bien qu'elle connaisse la vérité, Irini accepte de suivre son amant qui déserte. Poursuivis par un contingent de l'armée, ils tentent de passer la frontière. Ils sont rattrapés, encerclés et tués.

The film is a drama set in World War II, following a group of United States Marines from boot camp to combat (6th Marines, 2d Marine Division). It depicts the forming of comradeships and the relentless training which the battalion, led by Major "High Pockets" Huxley, has to undergo. In two battles (Guadalcanal and Tarawa), the battalion is used only for mop-up duties, but after an out-of-line argument between "High Pockets" and the commanding general, they are used as lead battalion in the battle for Saipan, suffering heavy casualties as they land on the exposed left flank of Red Beach. Huxley is killed and as they watch his body being carried off the field his grim-faced men fix bayonets ready to meet a Japanese counter-attack.

American correspondent Mike Malone uncovers a Nazi plot for an uprising of the Arab tribes in Libya. Pursued by Sheik David and his men, Mike takes refuge in the suite of Nancy Brooks, who is in the British Intelligence. He asks her to hide a gun and escapes through a window. Reporting the affair to British Consul Herbert Forbes, the latter tries to discourage him from further investigation, as the British are aware of the plot and are planning on staging a coup. He goes with Mike to Nancy's apartment, and she denies having ever seen him before. Sheik Ibrahim, next in command of the Arab tribe to Sheik David, is plotting with Nazi agent Yussof Streyer to kill David who is friendly with the British. Mike and Nancy have gone to David's camp, escape from Ibrahim's henchmen, and get back to El Moktar before the Arabs attack the garrison.

In 1942, Vasily Zaytsev (Jude Law), a shepherd from the Ural Mountains who is now a soldier in the Red Army, finds himself on the front lines of the Battle of Stalingrad. Forced into a suicidal charge by barrier troops against the invading Germans, he uses impressive marksmanship skills—taught to him at a young age by his grandfather—to save himself and commisar Danilov (Joseph Fiennes). Nikita Khrushchev (Bob Hoskins) arrives in Stalingrad to coordinate the city's defences and demands ideas to improve morale. Danilov, now a Senior Lieutenant, suggests that the people need figures to idolize and give them hope, and publishes tales of Vasily's exploits in the army's newspaper that paint him as a national hero and propaganda icon. Vasily is transferred to the sniper division, and he and Danilov become friends. They also both become romantically interested in Tania (Rachel Weisz), a citizen of Stalingrad who has become a Private in the local militia. Danilov has her transferred to an intelligence unit away from the battlefield.
