Based on a Hindi short story by Munshi Premchand about a cow slaughter in a village turning into curse, Godhuli is an allegory for nation-building and the clash of modernity with tradition in rural India. It portrays the story of a modern agriculturist who returns from US after studying agriculture and brings his American wife to the village. The film was made in Hindi and Kannada versions: Tabbaliyu Neenade Magane.
Godhuli was included the 1984 International Film Festival of India (IFFI). At the 25th National Film Awards, S. P. Ramanathan won the Best Audiography. It won the Filmfare Award for Best Screenplay at the 27th Filmfare Awards for Girish Karnad and B.
Synopsis
Après avoir étudié aux États-Unis Nandan revient dans son village du Karnataka à l’occasion du décès de son père. Il reprend l’élevage de vaches de ce dernier, et se retrouve ainsi à la tête de la principale activité économique du village. Rapidement, il entre en désaccord avec le prêtre du village, pourtant son ami d’enfance, au sujet des vaches. Nandan, en partie sous l’influence de son épouse américaine, considère surtout son troupeau comme une source de profit et souhaite moderniser son exploitation, tandis que le prêtre est indigné par le peu de respect dont Nandan fait preuve envers un animal sacré dans la religion hindoue. Les deux hommes vont user l’un de son influence morale et religieuse, l’autre de son pouvoir économique, pour rallier les villageois à leur cause.Actors

The film is based on William Shakespeare's Macbeth and with Mumbai underworld as its backdrop. Maqbool (Irrfan Khan) is the right-hand man of Jahangir Khan (alias Abba Ji) (Pankaj Kapoor), a powerful underworld don. Maqbool is grateful and feels a close connection and personal indebtedness to Abba Ji. The movie gains pace with two corrupt police-men (played by Om Puri and Naseeruddin Shah) predicting that Maqbool would soon take over the reins of the Mumbai Underworld from Abba Ji. These two thus play a role akin to the three witches in the original play.

The film of exploitation in rural Bihar, in which a landlord (Utpal Dutt)’s men wreck a village and kill the benevolent schoolmaster (Anil Chatterjee) who was a progressive force in the village. The labourer Naurangia (Naseeruddin Shah) breaks with a tradition to passive resistance and retaliates by killing the landlord’s brother. Naurangia and his wife Rama (Shabana Azmi) become fugitives from justice. After many efforts to find sustenance elsewhere, the two decide to return home. To earn the fare, they agree to drive the herd of pigs through the river, causing the pregnant Rama to believe she has lost her baby.But they have to swim across a wide, swiftly flowing river, in which they nearly drown before reaching safety. At the end of the film Naurangia puts his ear to her belly and listens to the heartbeats of the unborn baby.
