Gun Hill Road is a 2011 drama film starring Esai Morales. The title of the film derives from the Bronx road of the same name. The film is notable for starring a transgender character (Michael) who is played by a real transgender person, Harmony Santana, who was the first openly transgender actress to be nominated for an Independent Spirit Award.

Synopsis

Ex-con Enrique ([[Esai Morales]]) returns home after a stint in prison. His wife Angela has had an affair while he was away, and his child Michael, who is a young trans woman in the process of transitioning and coming out, is exploring life, leaving Enrique with decisions to make regarding his family's future.

Mick O'Brien (Sean Penn) is a 16-year-old Irish-American hoodlum from Chicago. While most of Mick's crimes involve snatching purses, vandalism, and getting into brawls, he aspires for bigger and meaner things, which leads him to attempt ripping off a rival, Paco Moreno (Esai Morales). Everything goes wrong: Mick's partner and best friend Carl (Alan Ruck) is killed, and Mick, while trying to escape the police, accidentally runs over and kills an eight-year-old boy who happens to be Paco's brother. Mick is sent to the Rainford Juvenile Correctional Facility rather than a state prison for adults. Most of the wardens and counselors seem to have lowered themselves to the role of zookeepers. The only exception of Ramon Herrera (Reni Santoni), a former gang member who talks tough to the inmates, but holds out hope for some of them, especially Mick.

Returning by ship to Buenos Aires, a young woman escapes her elderly husband by swapping places with a woman committing suicide. She believes her new life will be that of an arranged marriage but finds it is in fact a ruse to cause her to work in a brothel. The film plays on the association of tango with brothels and clearly alludes to the practices of the Zwi Migdal white-slavery and prostitution ring that was active in Buenos Aires early in the twentieth century and was dissolved thanks to Raquel Liberman.

The story, based on an idea from Salman Khan, centres on Saajan, the son of a colonel in the Indian army, and Kaajal, a modest girl from "a respectable family." Neelakantham Naidu (Prakash Raj) is a big factionist. He has a loyal confidant Narasimha (Suman), who is willing to give his life for the sake of his master. After many years, Neelakantham's wife (Pragathi) gives a birth to a baby girl. But all the earlier babies born to Neelakantham died due to some unknown reason. The priests advise Neelakantham to name his daughter as Gangotri. They also warn Neelakantham that the child has 'jalagandam', hence they ask Neelakantham to take Gangotri to the holy place of Gangotri in the Himalayas and perform 'abhyangana snanam' (bathe with turmeric, milk, etc.) for the next 15 years. After 15 years, Gangotri would be free of any danger. When nobody could entertain the child Gangotri, Simhadri, the son of Narasimha entertains her with a song. Simhadri becomes a servant and friend to Gangotri. They grow up together. Simhadri (Allu Arjun) and Gangotri (Aditi Agarwal) are good friends. In the mean time, Simhadri's mother (Seetha) sacrifices her life to save Neelakantham. When Gangotri attains puberty, Gangotri's paternal aunt (Telangana Shakuntala) restricts Simhadri from meeting Gangotri as it would be wrong. Gangotri and Simhadri realise that they are in love. When Simhadri comes to Gangotri's place clandestinely to meet her, they are caught by Neelakantham. Neelakantham beats Simhadri. Meanwhile, Narasimha comes to the spot and interferes. This causes a rift between Neelakantham and Narasimha. Neelakantam is misinformed about Narasimha's intentions; hence he has bombs planted in the house of Narasimha. Simhadri is away at that time. When Simhadri comes to know that Neelakantam is responsible for the bombing, he comes to Neelakantam's house and challenges that he will marry Gangotri in 365 days. Then Simhadri goes to the holy place Gangotri and waits for his ladylove to come there for the final sacred bath. The rest of the film is about how Simhadri and Gangotri unite.
