Synopsis
D'un kolkhoze reculé de l'Altaï, Ivan Rastorgouïev et sa femme Nina partent pour une station thermale sur la mer Noire. Ils laissent derrière eux la vie villageoise, les champs à perte de vue, leurs amis, des tablées chantant les chansons populaires. Leur voyage dans le train est ponctué de situations tragicomiques provoquées par le décalage entre la mentalité de paysan et citadin. Ils y rencontrent un charmant voleur qui se fait passer auprès d'eux pour un ingénieur ferroviaire, leur fait boire du Cognac trouvé dans une valise dérobée dont il inspecte le contenu sur le champ, et s'enfuit à l'arrivée de la milice lancée à ses trousses. S'apercevant de leur erreur, les Rastorgouïev deviennent extrêmement méfiants et voient les criminels partout. Ainsi, ils mettent du temps à faire confiance au professeur linguiste qui se joint à eux dans le compartiment. Mais le brave homme finit par briser la glace et les invite à passer quelques jours chez lui à Moscou. Les Rastorgouïev y découvrent le quotidien d'une famille d'intellectuels et une multitude d'objets dont ils ne soupçonnaient pas l’existence. Ivan se trouve même invité à une conférence linguistique où il raconte devant un parterre médusé une anecdote de sa jeunesse. Puis, le couple poursuit son chemin vers la mer.Actors

There is an old man named Yermolai Voyevodin living in a Siberian village. He has four sons and a daughter. They all have different lives. The oldest one - Ignat - moves to Moscow and begins to perform at a circus. He is happy with his life and manages to seduce his brother Maxim into coming to the capital. Maxim finds a job as a laborer at a construction site, but constantly feels loneliness. He longs for his village, but he is too proud to come back home. Another son - Stepan - gets into a "righteous" fight and goes to prison. Three months before his official release, Stepan escapes from prison and returns to his village to see his relatives and his homeland and to find strength to serve his sentence, as he calls it. The old man is left with his favorite son Vasily and a mute daughter Verka.

The movie starts off with a man, named Schlomo (Lionel Abelanski), running crazily through a forest, with his voice playing in the background, saying that he has seen the horror of the Nazis in a nearby town, and he must tell the others. Once he gets into town, he informs the rabbi, and together they run through the town and once they have got enough people together, they hold a town meeting. At first, many of the men do not believe the horrors they are being told, and many criticize Schlomo, for he is the town lunatic, and who could possibly believe him? But the rabbi believes him, and then they try to tackle the problem of the coming terrors. Amidst the pondering and the arguing, Schlomo suggests that they build a train, so they can escape by deporting themselves. Some of their members pretend to be Nazis in order to ostensibly transport them to a concentration camp, when in reality, they are going to Palestine via Russia. Thus the Train of Life is born.

Jean-Claude (25) and Pierrot (23) are young sociopathic men who travel around France, committing petty crimes and running from the law. After they get in trouble with a hairdresser in Valence for stealing his car, they grab his pistol and kidnap his assistant Marie-Ange, an apathetic girl. When they are bored with unorgasmic Marie-Ange, they decide to find a passionate woman and meet Jeanne Pirolle, a deranged woman in her forties who is just released from prison and had spent ten years in a cell. After a threesome, Jeanne commits suicide and the men return to Marie-Ange. They find Jeanne's psychopathic son Jacques who had been incarcerated as well. Then, the four consider founding a crime family but at their first crime, an attempted robbery, Jacques commits a revenge killing and the others flee. While on the run, they meet a family having a picnic near Col d'Izoard and the delinquent teenage daughter Jacqueline wants to join them. They take Jacqueline and on learning that she is still a virgin, they decide to deflower her. After dropping Jacqueline, the three ride away aimlessly.

The young Miloš Hrma, who speaks with misplaced pride of his family of misfits and malingerers, is engaged as a newly trained station guard in a small railway station during the Second World War and the German occupation of Czechoslovakia. He admires himself in his new uniform, and looks forward, like his prematurely-retired railwayman father, to avoiding real work. The sometimes pompous stationmaster is an enthusiastic pigeon-breeder with a kind wife, but is envious of the train dispatcher Hubička's success with women. Miloš holds an as-yet platonic love for the pretty young conductor Máša. The experienced Hubička presses for details of their relationship and realizes that Miloš is still a virgin.
