Add to a movie listHoosiers is a 1986 sports film written by Angelo Pizzo and directed by David Anspaugh. It tells the story of a small-town Indiana high school basketball team that wins the state championship. It is loosely based on the Milan High School team that won the 1954 state championship.
Gene Hackman stars as Norman Dale, a new coach with a spotty past. The film co-stars Barbara Hershey and Dennis Hopper, whose role as the basketball-loving town drunk earned him an Oscar nomination. Jerry Goldsmith was also nominated for an Academy Award for his score.
Synopsis
In 1951 Norman Dale arrives in the rural southwest Indiana town of Hickory to become a high school teacher and head basketball coach. He was hired by Cletus Summers, the principal and a longtime friend of Dale's. Dale had lost a previous collegiate coaching position after striking one of his players so the job is something of a last chance for him.Actors

American downhill skier David Chappellet (Robert Redford) arrives in Wengen, Switzerland to join the United States ski team, along with fellow newcomer D. K. Bryan (Kenneth Kirk). Both men were sent for by team coach Eugene Claire (Gene Hackman) to replace one of his top skiers who was recently injured during an FIS competition. Raised in the small town of Idaho Springs, Colorado, Chappellet is a loner with a single-minded focus on becoming a skiing champion, and shows little interest in being a team player. After refusing to race at the Lauberhorn because of a late starting position, he makes his European skiing debut at the Arlberg-Kandahar in Austria, where he finishes in an impressive fourth position. In the final race of the season at the Hahnenkamm-Rennen in Kitzbühel, Austria, he crashes.

The film opens with an unsuccessful professional clown, Norman F. Snively, and his dog by the name of "Old Blue," doing a show at a birthday party. Due to the dog causing trouble at the birthday party and both being tossed out of the house, Snively angrily takes him in a kennel to a dog pound, until the kennel falls off his truck. The dog is homeless until he meets a 12-year-old boy, Josh Framm (whom the plot mainly revolves around). After the death of his father, who died in a plane crash during a test flight (indicated in the headline of a framed newspaper article briefly read by Josh), Josh moves with his family from Virginia to Fernfield, Washington. Due to heartbreak over his father's passing, he is too shy to try out for his middle school's basketball team and to make any friends. He instead becomes the basketball team's manager, an absurd offer by coach Joe Barker which he accepts. He practices basketball by himself in a makeshift court that he sets up in a disused allotment, where he first meets the dog, naming him Buddy. Josh soon learns that Buddy has the uncanny ability to play basketball.

Jamal Jeffries (Miguel A. Núñez, Jr.) is a UBA (fictional version of the NBA) basketball star whose undisciplined on-and-off-court antics have earned him a bad reputation in the basketball community. Jamal is dropped from his team, the Charlotte Beat and suspended indefinitely after he strips naked in protest of being taken out of a game. Marco Montes est l'entraîneur adjoint de l'équipe de basket de l'Estudiantes Madrid en Liga ACB. Personnage arrogant et de mauvaises manières, il finit par être licencié de son travail après une altercation en plein match avec l'entraineur principal de l'équipe. Parallèlement, son couple bat de l'aile car Sonia, sa compagne, désire un enfant, mais lui tergiverse et fuit cette responsabilité. Un soir, il s'enivre de dépit dans un bar et prend le volant. Il est alors responsable d'un accident de la route. Arrêté en état d'ivresse avancée, il se voit puni d'une lourde amende. Il doit alors choisir entre deux années de prison ou 90 jours de travail d'intérêt général au sein d'une équipe de basket appelée "Les Amis" et constituée de sportifs débutants handicapés. Après un premier rejet de l'idée, il finit par s'y plier à contrecœur, jusqu'à découvrir qu'il peut beaucoup apprendre du monde du handicap. Peu à peu, l'équipe devient de plus en plus compétitive et se qualifie pour le championnat national.
