House by the River is a 1950 Gothic film noir directed by Fritz Lang, and starring Louis Hayward, Jane Wyatt, Lee Bowman, and Dorothy Patrick.

Synopsis

A rich novelist, Stephen Byrne, who lives and works by a river, kills his attractive maid after she begins screaming following a drunken pass. The writer, with the help of his limping brother, loads the body into an old sack and the pair throws the body into the river. Unfortunately, the body comes back up and floats by the house days later. Despite desperate attempts by the brothers to get the body, the police end up recovering it.

In wartime England during the Blitz, Stephen Neale (Ray Milland) is released from Lembridge Asylum. While waiting for a train to London, Neale visits a village fête hosted by the Mothers of Free Nations charity. He guesses the weight of a cake for a shilling, and is urged to go to the palm reader's tent to have his fortune told by Mrs. Bellane (Aminta Dyne), an older woman. He asks her to ignore the past and tell the future, which startles her. She cryptically tells him to take another guess at the weight of the cake at 4 pounds 15½ ounces. Neale does so and wins the prize. Then a young blond man hurries to see Mrs. Bellane. People try to persuade Neale to give the cake to the blond man, but he refuses.

Homicide detective Sergeant Dave Bannion (Glenn Ford), is an honest cop who investigates the death of fellow officer Tom Duncan. He asks for particulars on the second home and she resents the implication. The next day, Bannion gets a dressing-down by Lieutenant Ted Wilks (Willis Bouchey), who is under pressure from "upstairs" to close the case.
