Howland Chamberlin (August 2, 1911 – September 1, 1984) was an American actor.

Howland Chamberlin was born on August 2, 1911 in Bronx, New York City, US.

Chamberlin moved in the 1930s from New York to California. He worked at a Federal Theatre Project, where he met his wife Leona, and at the Pasadena Playhouse. He made his film debut in the 1946 drama The Best Years of Our Lives, which won seven Oscars. In the next years, he often portrayed nervous figures in film noir. Although Chamberlin's appearance was uncredited, he was memorable as the cynical hotel receptionist in 1952's High Noon. High Noon remained Chamberlin's last film for 25 years, because he was blacklisted by the House of Un-American Activities and did not get any film roles.

He returned to working in New York, where he worked as a stage actor. In 1977 he made his screen comeback in the TV film A Touch of the Poet. He played Judge Atkins in the 1979 film Kramer vs. Kramer by Robert Benton. This was Chamberlain's third film in which a fellow cast member won the Oscar for Best Actor. Chamberlin worked as an actor until his death.

Chamberlin died in Oakland, California on September 1, 1984.

Miles Harding is an architect who envisions a brick shaped like a jigsaw puzzle piece that could enable buildings to withstand earthquakes. Seeking a way to get organized, he buys a personal computer to help him develop his ideas. Although he is initially unsure that he will even be able to correctly operate the computer, he later buys numerous extra gadgets that were not necessary for his work, such as switches to control household appliances like the blender, a speech synthesizer, and a microphone. The computer addresses Miles as "Moles", because Miles mistyped his name during the initial set-up. When Miles attempts to download data from a mainframe computer at work, the computer begins to overheat. In a state of panic, Miles pours a nearby bottle of champagne over the machine, which then becomes sentient.

The story concerns a young mentally disturbed man, Martin Lynn (Farley Granger), who goes on a rampage after his sick mother dies. One of the man's biggest beefs is with the Catholic Church who, in addition to slighting him when his mother needed a priest, once refused to bury his father years earlier because he committed suicide. The man, blaming the environment he lives in, goes on a rampage taking revenge on his cheap boss, a mortician and a priest, Father Kirkman (Harold Vermilyea), who refuses to give his poor mother a big funeral. He begins his rampage by killing the hard-line Catholic priest, who slighted him, by beating him with a heavy crucifix. Later, another young priest, Father Roth (Dana Andrews), suspects the young man, now arrested for another crime, for the killing.
