Hundertwasser's Rainy Day (German: Hundertwassers Regentag) is a 1972 West German short documentary film about artist Friedensreich Hundertwasser rebuilding an old wooden ship called Regentag (Rainy Day). Directed by Peter Schamoni, it was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Documentary Short.

Synopsis

Le documentaire suit l’artiste Friedensreich Hundertwasser et présente sa manière de travailler, ses partis pris artistiques et ses convictions personnelles. Au début du film, Hundertwasser est étendu sur un bloc de glace, près de son moulin dans la région de Waldviertel, à Vienne. De l’eau coule sous la glace et Hundertwasser confie être fasciné par cet élément de la nature. Il s’est d’ailleurs acheté un bateau trois années auparavant et l’a baptisé Regentag. Son souhait est de se retirer sur l’eau à bord de ce bateau.

Lars von Trier prétend que le court-métrage Det perfekte menneske de Jørgen Leth sorti en 1967 est son film préféré. Dans le but de lui rendre hommage, mais d'une manière perverse, à la fois manipulatrice et créatrice, il propose à l'auteur du film original, son compatriote Jørgen Leth, de détruire et de reconstruire autrement ce court-métrage. Il défie Leth d'en tourner cinq remakes. Pour chaque projet, il lui impose de nouvelles « obstructions », consignes, restrictions, interdictions plus ou moins arbitraires, l'obligeant à repenser l'histoire, l'esthétique et les personnages de son film. Il s'ensuit à chaque épreuve un feed back entre les deux hommes où Lars von Trier, dans une sorte de position de « directeur de conscience », à la limite de l'humiliation, semble prendre à cœur de déconstruire et détruire ce que Jørgen Leth a réalisé.

The plot of the film revolves around the life of seamen on board an anonymous aircraft carrier. Because of war time restrictions, the name of the aircraft carrier was disguised as "the Fighting Lady", although she was later identified as USS Yorktown. A few shots of aircraft landing were filmed aboard the Yorktown's sister ship USS Ticonderoga.

The film portrays the turbulent life of the “Great Z”, an engine driver on the Abidjan - Ouagadougou line for twenty years. He was laid off in 1995 by the National Railways of Burkina Faso following the privatization imposed by the World Bank.
