Synopsis

Rio de Janeiro, 1950. Euridice, 18 ans, et Guida, 20 ans, sont deux soeurs inséparables. Elles vivent chez leurs parents et rêvent, l’une d’une carrière de pianiste, l’autre du grand amour. A cause de leur père, les deux soeurs vont devoir construire leurs vies l’une sans l’autre. Séparées, elles prendront en main leur destin, sans jamais renoncer à se retrouver.

Trois destins de femmes cubaines aux prénoms identiques, à trois périodes historiques distinctes, ou l'évolution de la condition féminine dans la plus grande île des Antilles. La première Lucía, issue d'une famille de la bourgeoisie coloniale, s'éprend d'un bel Espagnol, déjà marié dans son pays. En découvrant cette réalité, celle-ci en perd la raison. Nous sommes au moment de la guerre d'indépendance contre l'Espagne (1895). La deuxième Lucía (cette fois de classe moyenne) s'engage aux côtés d'un révolutionnaire dans le combat contre la dictature de Gerardo Machado (1932). Pauline (Valérie Mairesse), a schoolgirl studying for her baccalaureate, wanders into a gallery and recognizes an old friend, Suzanne (Thérèse Liotard), in one of the photographs displayed. Suzanne has two children with the photographer and is expecting a third which she cannot afford to keep. In order to help raise funds for an abortion, Pauline lies to her parents about a school trip, and when they find out, she leaves home and begins working as a singer. The photographer commits suicide and Suzanne moves away to live with her parents on their farm. The two women lose touch for ten years but are reunited at a demonstration in 1972 and begin to correspond by postcard. Pauline, now known as Pomme, moves to Iran with her boyfriend Darius (Ali Rafie), but becomes dissatisfied with her life there and returns to France. Suzanne leaves the farm and opens a family planning clinic in Hyères, where she marries a local doctor.

The film chronicles a legal-precedent setting court case that outlawed the kidnapping of child brides in Ethiopia.
