The story revolves around Dharamraj "Dada" Thakur (Anil Kapoor). Since the death of his father Ghajraj Thakur(Rajinikanth), Dada Thakur has been the head of the village. His family consists of his wife Lakshmi (Rekha) and two younger brothers, Arjun and Nakul. Dada Thakur and Lakshmi are virtually like parents to Arjun and Nakul. Dr.Sandeep Kumar (Jeetendra), Inspector Ranjith (Rajinikanth) & Advocate Prakash (Rishi Kapoor) are thickest, best & childhood friends, the three of them grew up together because Prakash is often and Ranjith’s father Daga (Amrish Puri) is a smuggler who left him alone because of his honesty and took his mother & sister with him so Sandeep’s parents (Pran & Shavukar Janaki) brought them up. Ranjith is an honest police officer, Sandeep is a well known doctor in the city, Prakash is a leading criminal lawyer three of them has always clash with Daga who became a big gangster and doesn’t know that Ranjith is his son. Ranjith & Prakash always carrels with Sandeep because the only problem with Sandeep is he is very short temper, he cannot withstand himself if somebody does any injustice to anyone. One day Daga’s gangster (Guru Bachan) kidnaps and rapes Ranjith’s wife Lata (Poonam Dhillon) who is pregnant which is seen by Sandeep and he bits him very hard and takes promise from Lata that she does not reveal this secret. Daga takes advantage of this he kills the gangster and traps Sandeep in that case. Ranjith arrests Sandeep and Prakash takes up the case but Sandeep doesn’t reveal the truth to protect Lata so Prakash makes a story that Sandeep has made the crime to protect his wife to save him, he brings a girl Rekha (Bhanu Priya) as Sandeep’s wife whom Sandeep has protected from few gangsters once a while. Meanwhile Sandeep loves and really marries Rekha and Prakash also loves a thief Shanthi (Kimi Katkar) whose brother is killed by Daga and for whom she is under search. At the end Ranjith comes know the truth, he accepts Lata even though she got raped and he recognizes Daga is his father and Rekha is his sister whom Daga left in streets in the childhood. Mrs. Malhotra (Reema Lagoo) is the mother of twins, who were separated at birth, and she only has one son. Mrs. Malhotra goes into shock and then is restricted to a wheelchair. Jan Nisar Akhtar Khan works as a Forest Officer, and lives with his wife Zakhiya and his daughter Neelu. One day while on duty he comes across some poachers who were cutting sandal wood trees illegally. When challenged, they retaliate, a struggle ensues, and one of them, Ram Gupta, is killed. Khan is charged with killing him, tried in Court, and sentenced to several years in prison. His shocked and devastated wife kills herself along with their daughter. Years later, an angry and embittered Khan is released from prison. One day he comes across another young man, Vijay Singh, and finds out that he is struggling with taking vengeance against three men who had traumatized and killed some of his family members, and decides to help him. Malati (Rati Agnihotri), a young girl from a middle-class family meets Suresh Ray (Mithun Chakraborty), who is the son of a well-known lawyer Dayashankar Ray (Danny Denzongpa). After dating each other for some time, she finds that she is pregnant. When Suresh refuses to marry Malati, and she decides against aborting the baby, her parents throw her out and disown her. Left alone, she decides to take Suresh to court. She is supported in this fight by Shakuntala (Rekha), a lawyer who works for woman's rights, who also has an illegitimate daughter from Dayashankar Ray. The case gets much publicity and public support, and the judge rules in Malati's favor. At this point however, Malati refuses to marry Suresh and decides to raise the child on her own. Street-wise and poor, Amar Nath (Amitabh Bachchan) makes a living selling cinema tickets and fast-food snacks (Bhel Puri) outside cinema halls. He is taken under the wing of a politician and Chair of the "Garibon Ki Party", Shankar Narayan (Kader Khan), allowed to join the Police Academy, and returns as a Police Inspector. He falls in love and gets married to Asha (Sridevi), the only daughter of multi-millionaire businessman, Sitaram (Utpal Dutt). When he successfully apprehends and kills a terrorist by the name of Anil Raj (played by Tiger Prabhakar), he is promoted as the Assistant Commissioner of Police. Asha shares his joy, and soon both are informed that they will soon be proud parents. Then Amar also apprehends and kills a smuggler by the Koya Koya Atachi (Shakti Kapoor), and gets immensely popular with the public, so much so that Shankar Narayan resigns and asks Amar to be the Chair of the political party, which Amar accepts and quits his job from the Police Force. It is then that pregnant Asha finds out that Amar is not who he claims to be but is a pawn in the hands of skilled politicians - who have been using him as their hit-man, and now are ready to use him as the Chief Minister so that they can carry on with their nefarious activities. Watch what Asha does to prevent Amar from influencing their newborn son, and from attaining power.
