Synopsis
In 1915, during World War I in Galicia, Croatian soldiers in the Austro-Hungarian Army were sent on Eastern Front to fight against Russian Army and Circassian bandits. After the battle, a survieved Austrian-Hungarian soldier, a Croat, takes uniform and indetification plate with insignia of dead NCO. The problem occurs when Austrian-Hungarian officer finds out that his documents are false.Actors

The film begins in March 1836 in the Mexican State of Coahuila y Tejas town of San Antonio de Bexar (now Downtown San Antonio in the U.S. state of Texas), site of the Alamo, where bodies of Texan defenders and Mexican attackers are strewn over the Alamo. The film then flashes back to a year earlier. Sam Houston (Dennis Quaid) attends a party where he tries to persuade people to migrate to Texas. He meets with David Crockett (Billy Bob Thornton), recently defeated for reelection to Congress. Houston explains to Crockett that as an immigrant to Texas, Crockett will receive 640 acres (2.6 km) [a square mile] of his own choosing. Crockett, with a grin, pointedly asks Houston whether this new republic is going to need a president.

In the early years of the Second World War, aeronautical engineer Barnes Wallis is struggling to develop a means of attacking Germany's dams in the hope of crippling German heavy industry. Working for the Ministry of Aircraft Production, as well as doing his own job at Vickers, he works feverishly to make practical his theory of a bouncing bomb which would skip over the water to avoid protective torpedo nets. When it came into contact with the dam, it would sink before exploding, making it much more destructive. Wallis calculates that the aircraft will have to fly extremely low (150 feet (46 m)) to enable the bombs to skip over the water correctly, but when he takes his conclusions to the Ministry, he is told that lack of production capacity means they cannot go ahead with his proposals.

We see a panorama of London in 1600 and travel to the Globe Theatre where the audience is being seated. The Chorus (Leslie Banks) enters and implores the audience to use their imagination to visualise the setting of the play. We then see, up on a balcony, two clergymen, The Archbishop of Canterbury (Felix Aylmer), and the Bishop of Ely (Robert Helpmann) discussing the current affairs of state. Henry (Laurence Olivier) then enters, and discusses with his nobles the state of France. A gift is delivered to Henry from the French Dauphin. The gift turns out to be tennis balls, a jibe at Henry's youth and inexperience. Offended, Henry sends the French ambassador away, and prepares to claim the French throne, a throne that he believes is rightfully his.

Au Nicaragua en 1979, le journaliste-photographe Russell Price couvre la guerre civile opposant les sandinistes au président Anastasio Somoza. Lui et Claire sont bientôt approchés par les sandinistes afin de photographier Rafael, leur leader, dont le gouvernement nicaraguayen vient d'annoncer la mort. Rafael est en réalité bel et bien mort, mais les guérilleros veulent démontrer, par une photographie, qu'il est toujours vivant afin de finir la guerre à leur avantage. Après quelques hésitations, Russell accepte et, le lendemain, la photo du chef sandiniste est diffusée dans tout le pays, ce qui déstabilise quelque peu le gouvernement Somoza. Le régime commence à se poser des questions sur la neutralité de la presse. Alex Grazier est bientôt arrêté puis abattu par la Guardia. Russell Price, qui a réussi à photographier l'assassinat, parvient à rendre publiques les photos et le gouvernement américain abandonne toute aide au régime somoziste. Les sandinistes entrent en vainqueurs à Managua et le dictateur fuit le pays.

In the Battle of France in June 1940, RAF pilots evacuate a small airfield in advance of the German Blitzkrieg. The pilots, along with British and French military, leave just as German aircraft arrive and execute a heavy strafing attack. RAF Air Chief Marshal Hugh Dowding (Laurence Olivier), realising that an imminent invasion of Great Britain will require every available aircraft and airman to counter it, stops additional aircraft being deployed to France so that they are available to defend Britain. In the next dramatic scene, French civilians watch in awe as a convoy of German troops march into France and take control.

It is the Second World War and the Royal Air Force attacks German V-1 flying bomb installations during the early summer of 1944. The de Havilland Mosquito fighter-bomber aircraft of Squadron Leader David "Scotty" Scott (David Buck) is shot down during a low-level bombing raid on a V-1 launching site, and Scott and his navigator/bomb-aimer are reportedly killed. His wingman and friend, then-Flight Lieutenant (later insignia Royal Canadian Air Force squadron leader) Quint Munroe (David McCallum) comforts Scott's wife Beth (Suzanne Neve) and a romance soon develops, rekindling one that they had had years earlier.
