Harikrishnan (Jayasurya) is the adopted younger brother of Karunan (Lal). When Karunan loses his right hand in an accident, Hari at a young age takes responsibility of his family. Karunan's sister, Sreekutti is in love with the son of Paramanandam (Jagathy Sreekumar), who is unscrupulous and demands a huge dowry for the marriage to be made possible. To make this marriage possible Harikrishnan and Karunan take a loan from a financier (Salim Kumar) and invest it in a fireworks business, only to lose it completely.

Vellaripravinte Changathi is based on the story of film-maker Augustine Joseph who made a Malayalam film in 1966. However, due to some reasons, the film did not make it to the theatres. The 1960s-70s was a period dominated by Prem Nazir, Sathyan, Sheela and others. Unluckily Augustine Joseph was not able to get the film released. Later he commits suicide due to the debts from the production of the film.

Kannan and Dasappan are two rowdies in their village. Shathrugnan. a newcomer, is in love with Dasappan' s sister, Devootty, but she is not interested in him. Shathru joins Kannan's and Dasappan's firm, KD & Company, as the manager, in an attempt to win the love of Devootty. KD & Company keeps as hostage a music troupe who comes to their village to perform. Sunny (Kunchacko Boban), a young priest, is put in charge of a church in a rural area. The church runs an old age home which is sponsored by Vavachan (Hareesh Peradi). There Sunny meets Sister Sophie (Miya George). The two working sincerely in the old age home and in the process discover the motives behind Vavachan's philanthropy. He has an agreement with the home that he gets the unclaimed dead bodies for the medical college run by his son (Krishna Kumar), which is always short of cadavers. Meanwhile Sunny meets Animol, the daughter of the church grave digger. She is a bright student who aspires to follow in the footsteps of Mother Theresa but due to financial troubles is unable to continue her education. Sunny offers to help her by getting an admission in a nursing college in Bangalore. Animol, while helping out to take care of an elderly woman from the old age home hospitalised in Vavachan's hospital witnesses her being smothered to death by Vavachan's son. Unable to hide her burden she confesses to Sophie and Sunny who advises her to reveal it to the police. But afraid for her life and her father Animol refuses and prepares to leave for Bangalore.
