Kalyaniyin Kanavan (Tamil: கல்யாணியின் கணவன்) is a 1963 Indian Tamil film, directed and produced by S. M. Sriramulu Naidu. The film stars Sivaji Ganesan and B. Saroja Devi in lead roles, M. R. Radha as villain and T. R. Ramachandran took care of the comedy assisted by Radhika. The film had musical score by S. M. Subbaiah Naidu.

Synopsis

The heroine Kalyani (Saroja Devi) goes swimming with friends in a river when she is carried away by strong waves. As she struggles, a bold young man Kathiresan (Sivaji Ganesan) saves her — expectedly, the saving of the damsel in distress leads to both falling in love.

Chandrasekaran, an industrialist, is very successful in his business and has a loving family. His three sons and two daughters live happily as one family. He brings up an orphan, Rangan (Sivaji Ganesan), who is utterly devoted to the family. Calamity strikes the family in the form of loss in business. The last daughter's marriage gets cancelled. The brothers and their wives ill-treat their parents and Rangan and his wife. Seeing this Chandrasekaran has no choice to ask Rangan and his wife leave their house. Aftermath Chandrasekaran dies a broken-hearted man leaving his wife and youngest daughter to be in their children's merciless hospitality. Rangan, with his simplicity and pure-hardheartedness, takes it upon himself to look after the mother and sister. In the end, he proves that love and affection is the greatest wealth.

Relates the true meaning of friendship between two youths, Raghu (Sivaji Ganesan) and Ravi (S. S. Rajendran). Ravi leaves his hometown in Tamil Nadu and comes to Amritsar. Here, Raghu finds him in an unconscious state and takes him home. Raghu sacrifices his managerial post and gives it to Ravi. Ravi, however, does not reveal his true identity and the real reason for leaving home. As per his parents wish, Ragu sees a girl to marry. However, when Ravi sees the photograph of the girl, he asks Rghu not to marry her. A shocking truth about the girl is then revealed to Raghu.

Nallasivam (S.V Ranga Rao) is a humble landlord in a village. He has a two children, Karpagam (K. R. Vijaya) and Rajangam (Muthuraman). Rajangam is studying in the city, he is a disobedient character who befriends Sheela. Sheela’ father Thandavam (M. R.Radha) plans to take over the properties and assets of Nallasivam through Rajangam marrying his daughter.

Mahalakshmi (Pandari Bai) is the daughter of a rich banker (Sahasranamam) who wishes that she should marry a young man (Gopi). However, a noted lawyer of that town, Sathasivam (Sivaji Ganesan), a widower, wishes to marry her and to save her father's reputation she marries him and soon loses her father. The couple have a son (Chalam, the noted Telugu actor). The lawyer’s nephew Bhoopathi (T.R. Ramachandran), not worldly-wise, has a friend (T.K. Ramachandran) who wishes to exploit him for his money. Bhoopathi has a sweetheart (Malini). Thanks to the marriage, the lawyer’s safe keys are now handled by Mahalakshmi which upsets the villain. He drives a wedge between the lawyer and his wife. Suspects his wife, the lawyer turns her out of the house. The innocent woman without her husband’s knowledge takes the child away. She loses the child who is brought up by a rich couple (S.V. Ranga Rao and Sandhya). This upsets Mahalakshmi who loses her mental equilibrium. Years pass and Mahalakshmi, completely cured, takes care of a young girl Vijaya (Sowcar Janaki) under a new name Ponni… Her son goes to England to become a barrister about which his mother has no knowledge. The villain creates fake letters as if written by Mahalakshmi and threatens to publish them in his third-rate ‘yellow’ magazine unless she pays a huge price. When she goes to meet the villain to persuade him to hand over the letters, he is found murdered. She is arrested and charged with murder. By now lawyer Sathasivam has become a judge and the case comes up for trial before him. How the truth comes out and happiness is restored forms the rest of the plot.
