It is a sequel to the 2006 movie Keerthi Chakra and the second in the Major Mahadevan series. The film is based on Kargil conflict (1999) between India and Pakistan. The political situation of the conflict is portrayed from an Indian perspective throughout the film.
The series' third part, Kandahar (starring Mohanlal and Amitabh Bachchan), was released in December 2010.
Synopsis
The movie revolves around the 1999 Kargil War between India and Pakistan. It revolves around the battle of Tololing between Indian Army Colonel Mahadevan and Pakistani Army Colonel Chengiz. In the climax, India wins the war and Mahadevan kills Chengiz and avenges the brutal murder of many Indian soldiers.Actors

Rajiv Gandhi was assassinated on 21 May 1991 in Sri Perumbatur, near the then Madras. The government of India constituted SIT a day later, and Major Sivaraman (Mammootty) a top investigation officer and a NSG commando with a proven track record is put in charge to hunt down the killers. Major Mahadevan (Mohanlal) is an officer deputed to the National Security Guards (NSG). He has been assigned to counter-terrorism duties in Kashmir and commands an elite group of NSG commandos. He calls back his buddy Havildar Jaikumar (Jiiva) from his honeymoon because he has information about major activities of the militants; he feels Jaikumar is needed for the team. The commandos raid a mosque in civilian dress and seize a big collection of arms and explosives. Later, during an operation focused on some cottages near the Dal Lake, a commando in the team is killed and an outraged Jaikumar shoots down a captured terrorist who challenges the commandos. A human rights activist (Shwetha Menon) learns about this and threatens to file a complaint with the government. She later understands the situation and the sincerity of the commandos and decides not to proceed with the complaint.

Madhavan Menon (Maddy) is a ruthless investigating officer working with the Mumbai Police. Hareendranath Nair (Prithviraj) is an Indian soldier guarding an Indian picket in Kashmir. He happens to meet a Pakistani soldier Mushraff (Javed Jaffrey) on one fine day. They immediately relate to each other and despite of being from different countries they seem to understand each other better than anyone else. They eventually become close friends and start to enhance the morale of each other. However, their friendship raises suspicions among others. They even put into question the genuineness of their patriotism which break their heart. They find themselves in nether world and the story proceeds to tell the hardship they have to go through for their friendship. It is not just with the Pakistani soldier he shares special bond, he also considers a dog by the name Baccardi as his companion. He even does not permit anyone to call him dog. He confides in the dog his inner thoughts and emotions which lifts his spirit slightly even at the most difficult times.
