L'imprésario Frans Rosen présente le ténor Marek Hausmann à la famille de sa fiancée Marianne Högberg, à l'occasion de leur futur mariage. Ce futur projet se trouve néanmoins compliqué par l'irruption des sœurs de Marianne. Quelque part dans la campagne près de Wilhelmshaven. Le médecin de campagne Rudolf Fachmin est marié en deuxième noce à Rachel, beaucoup plus jeune. Du premier mariage, il a eu Frank, son fils déjà adulte, qui a à peu près l'âge de sa femme. Ils ont une liaison. Pour Frank, ce n'est pas seulement par désir sexuel, mais c'est aussi un acte de vengeance tardive envers le géniteur. Il accuse son père d'avoir trop vite remplacée la première femme vite abandonnée au début par une nouvelle, à savoir Rachel. Rachel a aussi un enfant, Roman. Le jeune garçon de neuf ans est tout sauf enthousiaste face à la situation générale et, poussé par l'amour maternel œdipien, tente d'assassiner le concurrent présumé Frank, en jetant un objet branché dans la baignoire. Mais au lieu de Frank, qui avait l'intention d'avoir un rapport avec Rachel dans l'eau du bain, c'est Rachel qui est électrocutée. Elle devient paralysée et doit désormais vivre en fauteuil roulant. Rudolf Fachmin a mis de côté son métier de médecin et veille jalousement sur les activités de son fils et de la deuxième épouse. Alors qu'il a gagné sa confiance, il rejette son fils Frank.

The film begins with a meeting between wealthy heiress Linnet Ridgeway (Lois Chiles) and her close friend Jacqueline de Bellefort (Mia Farrow). Samir Sahni is a farmer living with his mom, dad, wife, Rama, a young daughter, and his younger brother, Veer. Samir gets an offer to work in the U.K., and departs accordingly. He would like to settle there, and after doing so, would like his family to also join him. The years go by, and Samir keeps in touch with his family regularly. Then the Sahni family stop receiving any letters from him, and are anxious to know what has happened to him. Veer is asked to travel to U.K. to find out, and he does so. What he finds are tens of thousands of East Indians on fake passports, working for less than minimum wages, poor unhealthy conditions, fear of being deported, and paying half of their earnings to fellow East Indians who had got them here through the underground. Veer finds no sign of his brother, and sets out to investigate, only to find deceit, murder, and his very own life in danger.

Hermann Hermann is a successful entrepreneur in the 1930s Germany. As the Nazis gradually rise to power, Hermann, who is a Russian émigré, becomes increasingly frightened and mentally unstable. His attempts at leaving the country are accompanied by symptoms of madness, the most vivid being his belief that he found his exact double, although the person in question differs from him in every respect. Albert (Perry King) is the chauffeur and lover for a wealthy pianist, Sills (Peter Donat). When Sills finds another chauffeur/lover, Albert is forced onto the streets of Los Angeles. Stella (Meg Foster) is a real estate agent who knows Sills and Albert as repeated rental clients. She finds Albert squatting in one of her properties and she offers Albert to spend the night at her house on the couch. The next day, she goes to work, expecting Albert to move out, but instead Albert cleans her cluttered house and cooks a fantastic dinner. Without verbally acknowledging it, they agree that Albert can stay longer and perform domestic duties while Stella continues working. Albert also gets a part-time job as a valet.
