Luna Papa (Lunnyy papa, en cyrillique Лунный папа) est un film réalisé par le cinéaste tadjik Bakhtiar Khudojnazarov, sorti en 1999. Il a été coproduit par des sociétés basées dans au moins sept pays différents : Allemagne, Autriche, France, Japon, Russie, Suisse et Tadjikistan. Malgré un financement majoritairement européen et la faible participation de sociétés venant d'Asie centrale, le réalisateur considère que son film est avant tout « centre-asiatique ». Ce film peut d'ailleurs être considéré comme l'un des films d'Asie centrale les plus connus internationalement.
Le scénario, fruit de la collaboration entre le réalisateur et le cinéaste géorgien Irakli Kvirikadze, réunit des influences variées. L'histoire est contée par un fœtus, qui narre les aventures de sa mère, laquelle part à la recherche du géniteur inconnu avec l'aide de sa famille. Le titre fait référence au point de départ de l'histoire : la relation furtive entre l'héroïne et l'inconnu lors d'une nuit de pleine lune.
Au sein d'une distribution très internationale, les rôles principaux sont joués par la Russe Chulpan Khamatova, que ce film a contribué à révéler, l'Allemand Moritz Bleibtreu et le Tadjik Ato Mukhamedshanov, dont c'est le dernier film. Le tournage s'est essentiellement déroulé au Tadjikistan, dans des conditions souvent difficiles.
Avant et pendant son exploitation en salles, Luna Papa a été présenté dans de nombreux festivals internationaux, notamment à la Mostra de Venise où il a été projeté pour la première fois, dans une section non compétitive, après avoir été pressenti pour être dans la compétition officielle. Le film a été récompensé à plusieurs reprises, remportant notamment la Montgolfière d'or à Nantes, le Prix Nika du meilleur réalisateur ou encore le prix de la meilleure contribution artistique à Tokyo.

At the beginning of his summer holiday, a somewhat naive trainee teacher Daniel (Moritz Bleibtreu) buys a ring from a stall run by a neighbor, the aspiring artist and street vendor Juli (in German, "Juli" would be not only the month July but also a common nickname for someone named "Julia"; Christiane Paul). The ring bears a Mayan sun symbol, which, according to Juli, has the power to lead him to the woman of his dreams, whom he will recognise by a similar sun symbol. As Juli has the ring's counterpart, and as she is in love with him, she invites Daniel to a party that evening, hoping that they will meet.

The Flemish boys Lars, Philip and Jozef are somewhere between 20 and 30 years of age and each has a physical handicap. Jozef is almost blind and needs to use a magnifier. Philip suffers from paraplegia. He can only move his head and can use one hand which gives him the strength to control his automated wheelchair. Lars has an incurable brain tumor a side effect of which is that he is restricted to a wheelchair as a result of his increasing paralysis. The three are good friends and visit each other frequently.

The film begins with Lola (Franka Potente) receiving a phone call from her distraught boyfriend, Manni (Moritz Bleibtreu). Manni is a small-time criminal and, during an important job collecting 100,000 marks, he relied on Lola to take him and the money to his boss, Ronnie. Lola's moped was stolen on her journey and Manni is forced to travel by subway but, startled by the sight of police, accidentally leaves the bag of money on the train.
