Dosti is the story of Ramnath or Ramu (Sushil Kumar) and Mohan (Sudhir Kumar). Ramu’s father Mr Gupta, a factory worker dies in an accident. When the factory refuses to pay compensation, his mother passes out in shock by falling from the stairs. Ramu is injured in an accident and he becomes crippled. Kanhaiyalal plays a poor farmer living with his wife and two half brothers (played by Sanjeev Kumar and Jeetendra). Sanjeev Kumar studies law supported by his brothers while Jeetendra helps Kanhaiyalal in cultivating the piece of land they own. Kanhaiyalal loans some amount from local moneylender against this piece of land for Sanjeev Kumar's law studies. Jeetendra is also in love with this moneylender's daughter, played by Nanda. With the passage of time, industrialisation and circumstances compel the brothers to disperse. Married Sanjeev Kumar, after learning about the amount loaned by his brother, leaves his modern wife, brothers and decides to come back only after he has sufficient amount to repay the loan. Mama Rampuri (Ashok Kumar) comes from a long line of criminals and is contemplating his latest for which he plans to enlist the services of his nephew Bhola (Deven Varma). Bhola however has had quite a few bad experiences with Mama and has been in and out of prison seven times trying to carry out Mama's mostly disastrous robbery plans.His mother (Leela Mishra) however doesn't listen to his pleas of wanting to live an honest life selling bananas or banyans and tries to inspire him by narrating the glorious deeds of his late father (her husband) who went to the prison no less than seventeen times and yet never complained. She has a heart ailment pretty soon which lands her in a hospital and poor Bhola needs a large amount of money for her treatment. After the tragic death of her dad, Dr. Rekha continues to live with her step-mother in Bombay, where she runs a Mental Institute. While traveling by train one night, they are accosted by a knife wielding escaped mental patient, Sunil, whose aggression is calmed by Rekha. She gets him admitted into her hospital where he is put under observation and treatment at the hands of Dr. Mathur and herself.
