Synopsis
Wanda, une jeune femme canadienne, est mariée à Marcus Heriot, un noble anglais dont la famille, dominée par les traditions ancestrales, la rejette comme une étrangère. À la suite des manigances de Lady Heriot, l'amitié de la jeune femme avec un homme plus âgé est présentée sous une forme telle qu'il s'ensuit un divorce. Peter Piper and his girlfriend Sidney Taylor have been engaged for a long time, but the economic situation of the Great Depression and the selfish demands of their respective mothers have delayed the marriage. They imagine their future together "after tomorrow" in the lyrics of their favorite song. Sidney's mother thinks only of her own needs, while clinging Mrs Piper can't bear the thought that her son will one day leave her, and does her best to break up Sidney and Peter's relationship.

Set around 1900, the titular Lazybones is in love with Agnes. Her sister, Ruth, returns home with a child and a story about marrying a seaman who was lost at sea. She attempts suicide by jumping in the river, but Lazybones saves her and, taking pity on the child, Kit, adopts her without revealing her true mother. Agnes and Ruth's mother is very strict and when told by Ruth of the child, strikes her with a cane. As the years pass, Ruth dies and Lazybones goes off to World War I. When he returns, intending to marry Kit now that she is grown up, he finds that she is in love with Dick Ritchie.

The film tells of Madeleine de Beaupre (Marlene Dietrich), a devious jewel thief. After stealing a string of pearls from jeweler Aristide Duval (Ernest Cossart), de Beaupre flees Paris. She leaves a trail that implicates psychiatrist Dr. Pauquet (Alan Mowbray). As she heads for the Spanish border, she nearly runs into Tom Bradley (Gary Cooper), an American auto mechanic vacationing in Europe. De Beaupre spots Bradley again at the Spanish customs. She's worried that the pearls will be found in her handbag, so she slips them into Bradley's pocket. After they make their way through inspection, de Beaupre flirts with Bradley in an attempt to get the pearls back. Bradley is too shy to respond so she gets his attention by trying to "repair" the engine of her car with a hammer. De Beaupre lures Bradley to the San Sebastian estate of her partner in crime, Carlos Margoli (John Halliday). It doesn't take long for Tom to figure out what de Beaupre and Margoli are up to. Yet, Bradley also knows that he's fallen for de Beaupre, and he's willing to go along as long as he's near her.
