Mirugam (Animal) is a 2007 Tamil film starring debutant Adhi and Padmapriya, directed by Samy.

Synopsis

The story is set in a village near Ramnad. The protagonist Ayyanar (Aadhi) is a care free villager who uses his muscle than his brains for any situation and behaves more or less like an animal. He is a terror to the whole village. He is a womanizer sleeps with sex workers and even rapes the housewives. There is no woman in the village that he hasn't had an encounter with. He beats up anyone including his mother. He makes a living through his bull which he hires out for its stud services. During one of his visits to the local brothel, he has raped the queen whore Savithri, but refuses to pay for her services.

Two families stay in identical bungalows, adjacent to each other, tracing their friendship to over forty years. Their respective progenies Chinna and Chella (Ajith and Jyotika) are childhood buddies, their easy camaraderie and strong bonding carried over to their adult years. The two study in the same college, same class, zoom together on the motorbike, their togetherness at home and college, as accepted a fact as it was in films like 'Piriyadha Varam Vendum', etc. Somewhere along the way, the duo fall in love, throwing some soft glances at each other, when the other is not looking. Their college mate, Karna (Yugendran, son of Malaysia Vasudevan), makes devious plans to separate the duo and make Chella his. He doesn't seem to have any running feud with Chinna, is quite friendly with the duo, nor does he seem to be particularly in love with Chella. Chinna laps up all that Karna tells him about Chella loving him, and is heartbroken and goes out of station on a business trip.

The film set in the 18th century is all about a group of people who steals from the wealthy to provide food and shelter for their tribe. Kombodhi (Pasupathy) is the gang leader and during one of his missions he meets the brave Varipuli (Aadhi). He brings Varipuli to his village and a bond develops between the two. But Varipuli has a past and his real name is Chinna. For the death of a youth Thogaimayan (Bharath) from neighbouring village, the King had in fact ordered one youth to be given as offering to the Almighty and Chinna was the choice. Sequence of events lead to Chinna escaping from the offering only to find out the mystery behind Thogaimayan's death. But that was too late as too many things happened in his village by then. Now he goes on the hiding. Cut to present, Chinna is taken to be offered to God. Where the flashback begins.

The story revolves around Ajayan (Mohanlal), who, after having tried his luck in different cities around the world, comes back to his village to look after his ageing mother Ammukutty Amma (Sheela) and to get her love and the nostalgia of his growing up years. There, he starts a company for producing agricultural equipment and earns his living as a farmer. One day a boy comes and meets Ajayan claiming to be his son. Ajayan used to boast himself as a womanizer in his youth is believed to be the boy's father by all villagers. Ammukutty Amma starts getting to like the boy and they form a very friendly relation and eventually she starts accepting the boy as Ajayan's real son, though Ajayan ferociously reject the boy's claim and dislikes him. The boy is persuaded by Ammukkty Amma to get close with Ajayan and subsequent events softens Ajayans attitude towards the boy. Ajayan then set forth to enquire about the real identity of the boy and travels to Chennai. He is absolutely sure that he is not his father as the real truth is his stories about adventures with woman were actually lies to get admiration of his friends. The climax show us that Ajayan accepts the boy as his own son.
