Synopsis
In a cemetery in Rome, at night, the soldier Camillo arrives among the graves. The rude and crude keeper Domenico welcomes him and makes him sit in a chapel. Camillo is looking for happiness, so Domenico ushers Camillo in a coffin, and closes him inside. In a short time Camillo dies, and is found as raised in the world of the dead. In fact he is accepted by the clique of the souls of the cemetery, led by Domenico alive. So Camillo, to pass the time, recounts the adventures of her young life, when he was a soldier, returned to his country to war. In the village Camillo, despair for many years, was considered a hero, and now that he was back, the citizens of the country, for fear of having economic problems on the tourism organizations who had long served in the county to celebrate the "sanctity" of the soldier disappeared, they tried to kill in all the ways the poor Camillo.Actors

Francis and John are two tramps on the outskirts of Rome, forced to rummage through the trash forever in search of food. They meet and make friends and through a misunderstanding are arrested. They are locked up in the security cell of the police station with The Maestro, a poor but well-dressed specialist in running away from the restaurants, taverns and eateries of Rome after having gorged without paying. Upon release, the three come together late in the evening and go to a restaurant where, at the end of a memorable binge (tagliatelle, tripe with tomato sauce, oxtail, asparagus, mozzarella with tomatoes, lamb with potatoes), and concoct a clever ruse to escape and cheat the owner Attilio. In running away, they fall into a cold and smelly mud puddle and take refuge in a cattle car to dry off and warm up. They fall asleep and wake to find themselves in a small town in Tuscany, and then begin to wander in the countryside of Poggibonsi (Siena). They try to scrounge food from the old woman Beatrice, but she does not even know how to feed the seven children living with her, and she is forced to sacrifice his old turtle. By and by they come across a restaurant owned by two hunters, who are in the habit of serving the customers only after enjoying their own comfortable meal and who keep their waiter chained up like a dog. The three friends release the waiter and decide to leave the restaurant without eating, sensing the danger of being caught and shot. After further wanderings, they are nearly lynched by a group of laborers after being caught eating the temporarily unguarded soup at the laborers' table. Left tied up while the mob goes off for a while, they are freed by the waiter who they had recently saved, who joins them. The waiter leads them to an old inn but when they arrive they are dismayed to learn that it has been turned into a funeral home.

The film is set in 1800, in Rome. Two thieves are imprisoned and condamned to death. To pass the time, the two tell ribald stories: in the first a duke and a man named Nicolino discover that their wives have betrayed them with the boys and with a priest; in the second story two farmers are fighting a clappers asimile Rustican Cavalry by Giovanni Verga, because their wife has betrayed both. In the third story a priest lover of beautiful women kills one of his pilgrims, because he is in love with one of the girls of his menagerie; in the last story a jealous husband kills the lover of his wife. At the murder also participates another lover, more mature of the killed. God is very raged for the crime, and sues the four, performing only the last lover: the murdered, because he's pure and innocent.

In 1944 in the Republic of Salò, the Fascist-occupied portion of Italy, four wealthy men of power, the Duke, the Bishop, the Magistrate, and the President, agree to marry each other's daughters as the first step in a debauched ritual. They recruit four teenage boys to act as guards and four young soldiers (called "studs", "cockmongers", or "fuckers"), who are chosen because of their big penises. They then kidnap nine young men and nine young women and take them to a palace near Salò. Accompanying them are four middle-aged prostitutes, also collaborators, who recount arousing stories for the men, who sadistically exploit their victims.

The film features two parallel stories. The first one is set in an unknown past time and is about a young man (Clémenti) who wanders in a volcanic landscape (shot around Etna) and turns into a cannibal. The man joins forces with a thug (Citti) and ravages the countryside. At the end, his company gets arrested and during his execution, he recites the famous tagline of the film: "I killed my father, I ate human flesh and I quiver with joy." The first half sums up the story of Jason and the Argonauts as they travel to Medea's barbarian land in search of the golden fleece. In fitting with the soundtrack (which features North African tribal music), Pasolini depicts Medea's people as a tribal people who perform rituals and sacrifices to secure their harvests. Their costumes and dances are based on those of Eastern European Mummers such as the Romanian Calusari ceremonies and their counterparts in the Balkans.
