Synopsis
En avril 1943, alors que sa femme attend un enfant, Hans Pippig est déporté au camp de concentration de Buchenwald. À son arrivée, le Kapo André Hofel, à la tête d'un réseau de résistants au sein du camp, le prend sous son aile en souvenir de l'amitié qu'il portait à son père. Deux années plus tard, un Polonais, Marian, arrive au camp avec une valise dans laquelle Hans découvre un enfant juif de 3 ans, Stefan. Hans, le Kapo Hofel et un groupe de prisonniers décident de le protéger au péril de leur vie.Actors

In August 1942, a group of German soldiers enjoy leave in Cervo, Liguria, Italy after fighting in North Africa. An awards ceremony is held for several soldiers in the unit, where one platoon's new commander, Leutnant (Lieutenant) Hans von Witzland (Thomas Kretschmann) is introduced. When Unteroffizier (Sergeant) Manfred "Rollo" Rohleder (Jochen Nickel) refuses to button up his collar, his Assault Badge is revoked. Following the assembly, Rohleder, Obergefreiter (Corporal) Fritz Reiser (Dominique Horwitz) and the rest are sent to the Eastern Front to fight for Stalingrad.

In October 1945 the 19-year-old German prisoner of war, Mark Niebuhr (Sylvester Groth) arrives together with other prisoners at a train station in Warsaw. A Polish woman waiting for her train at the station believes that he is the SS officer who murdered her daughter during a raid in Lublin. He is removed from the other prisoners and incarcerated in a single prison cell. Again and again he is interrogated by a Polish officer who is asking him to write down his life story and to tell his real name. The young former soldier asserts that he is Mark Niebuhr and maintains his innocence, not knowing why he has been detained and does not understanding why he is being questioned.

The film begins with VIPs visiting the headquarters of the Strategic Air Command (SAC) at Offutt AFB in Omaha, Nebraska. During the trip, an alert is initiated by USAF's early warning radar that an unidentified flying object is making an unauthorized intrusion into American airspace. Defense protocols dictate that the SAC must always keep several bomber groups airborne 24 hours a day in the event of a nuclear attack on the United States. Following the alert, bombers are ordered to proceed to predetermined aerial "fail-safe points" to await their final "go" orders before proceeding towards Soviet targets.

The time is the early-to-mid-1960s, the height of the Cold War between the United States and the Soviet Union. An unknown aircraft approaches North America from Europe. American bombers of the Strategic Air Command (SAC) are scrambled to their fail safe points near Russia. The bombers have orders not to proceed past their fail safe points without receiving a special attack code. The original "threat" is proven to be innocuous and recall orders are issued. However, due to a technical failure, the attack code is transmitted to Group Six, which consists of six Vindicator supersonic bombers and four escort fighters. Colonel Grady, the head of the group, tries to contact Omaha to verify the fail-safe order (called Positive Check), but due to Soviet radar jamming, Grady cannot hear Omaha. Concluding that the attack order and the radar jamming could only mean nuclear war, Grady commands Group Six towards Moscow, their intended destination.

Quatre militaires allemands sont condamnés pour leur inconduite par le Tribunal disciplinaire et sont incorporés au bataillon 999. Le premier, le Colonel von Bartlitz, Grand Croix de Fer, a sauvé la vie à cinq cents blessés en les sortant de l’enfer de Weschensjaka, alors que les ordres étaient d’abandonner ces hommes à leur sort. Le second, Erik Wiedeck, est un paysan qui a prolongé sa permission sans autorisation pour aider sa femme enceinte à moissonner les blés. Le troisième, Ernst Deutschmann, est bactériologiste. Son erreur a été de tester sur lui-même un nouveau vaccin qui pourrait sauver des milliers d’hommes, mais qui l’a rendu incapable de répondre à l’appel. Enfin, le quatrième, Karl Schwanecke, profitait des alertes pour cambrioler les appartements.
