Naseem is considered an important socio-political film that marks a turning point in the Hindu-Muslim dynamics in India as it is based around the Babri Masjid demolition of 1992. It stands amidst great films of this genre, like KA Abbas's Dharti Ke Lal (1946) and M. S. Satyu's Garam Hawa (1973).
It won the 1996 National Film Award for Best Screenplay for Saeed Akhtar Mirza and Ashok Mishra.

The film is set between June and December 1992, the days preceding the infamous demolition of the Babri Masjid at Ayodhya in the Indian province of Uttar Pradesh by Hindu fanatics. Relationship between Naseem, a 15-year-old schoolgirl belonging to a middle class Bombay based Muslim family and his ailing grandfather takes the story forward as the family watches with increasing horror on their TV the news of the growing tension between Muslims and Hindus. The grandfather keeps regaling her with stories of life marked by communal harmony in the pre-independence city of Agra. As communal tension erupts in the city of Bombay, Naseem notices changing dynamics at her school and in the neighborhood, while her grandfather watches helplessly at a city getting deeply divided on communal lines. The old man dies on December 6 coinciding with the news of the destruction of the mosque.

Après avoir étudié aux États-Unis Nandan revient dans son village du Karnataka à l’occasion du décès de son père. Il reprend l’élevage de vaches de ce dernier, et se retrouve ainsi à la tête de la principale activité économique du village. Rapidement, il entre en désaccord avec le prêtre du village, pourtant son ami d’enfance, au sujet des vaches. At a government laboratory in rural California, a weaponized version of influenza (called Project Blue) is accidentally released, immediately wiping out everyone on staff except for military policeman Charles Campion and his family, who flee the base. However, Campion is already infected by the superflu, nicknamed "Captain Trips", and spreads it to the outside world. That evening, Campion crashes his car at a gas station in East Texas where Stu Redman (Gary Sinise) and some friends have gathered. When they investigate, they find Campion dying of the flu next to his wife and baby daughter, who are already dead. Campion tells Stu with his dying breath that he was followed from the base by a mysterious figure, and states "You can't outrun the Dark Man". The next day, the U.S. military arrive to quarantine the town. While the other townspeople quickly become ill and die, Stu remains healthy and is confined at a CDC facility in Vermont order to study a possible cure. This proves futile and the superflu rages unchecked, causing civilization to collapse and killing over 99% of the population of the entire world in less than two months.
