Synopsis

Deux jeunes gens se rencontrent dans un tramway. Lui, un jeune photographe de mode très demandé et voyageur infatigable. Elle, une jeune violoncelliste, étudiante. Ces deux jeunes gens vont tomber amoureux... et décident de s'installer loin du monde : ils entrent dans un appartement vide, coupent le téléphone et suppriment la sonnette. À partir de là, chaque jour sera consacré à leur passion l'un pour l'autre.

The film begins with the main character Ivan Yermakov (Alexei Chadov) being interviewed, and as he begins his story the films cuts to the spring of 2000, during the Second Chechen War, shortly after the fall of Grozny. A Chechen warlord Aslan Gugayev (Giorgi Gurgulia) runs a camp next to a mountain aul in the Chechen highlands. Despite having secure income from his organized crime gangs in Moscow, Saint Peterburg and Samara as well as some legitimate business there, he takes joy in kidnapping, since that is more patriotic and militant than random crime. Both Ivan and his comrade Fyodka were enslaved after they were taken prisoners in early 2000. They are held captive with a Russian-Jewish businessman named Semyon from Vladikavkaz, who was being held for ransom.

The location is the Belarusian forests, close to the Polish border, during Operation Bagration in the summer of 1944. After a short pause, the Red Army is preparing to advance, but on one segment of the front there are two serious obstacles: an unnamed hill with unknown German strength, and a highly skilled German sniper, who is killing off not only Russian officers, but also all captured German officers before they can be interrogated. The film starts with a farewell ceremony in Krasnoyarsk, where a band of young recruits is preparing for their departure to their place of military service. On arrival at their bootcamp in the Fergana Valley of Uzbekistan they meet their drill instructor, Senior Praporschik Dygalo, a seasoned veteran of several tours in Afghanistan and a brutal trainer who treats the recruits very harshly and forces them to take part in extreme physical exercises everyday. During their harsh and brutal training, the recruits overcome their differences and build bonds. Between the harsh training sessions, they receive lessons in operating dangerous plastic explosives and how to conduct themselves in Afghanistan.

Young con artist with a rather nice personality, Edik (Konstantin Khabensky) gets in trouble gathering long lost foreign relatives together. Wealthy and middle-class émigrés who have made it in the new lands (the Americas, Israel) return to the homeland, to the roots from which they were severed. The implicit motivation for their return is the search for spiritual nourishment, and so the émigrés sacrifice the material comforts of their villas and Western civilization to journey to their ancestral past, the timeless village of Golotvin. They believe that here they will be able to complete themselves by reconnecting with their heritage. All for the nominal fee of Edik, a free agent and a small time crook who orchestrates an elaborate crime with the intention of earning a pile of money by tricking a group of pilgrims into thinking that a small village is their homeland and its inhabitants are their long lost relatives. The levels of deception multiply quickly.
