Paarai (English: Rock) is a 2003 Tamil language motion picture directed by K. S. Ravikumar. The music was composed by Sabesh Murali. The film a remake of Malayalam film Mahayanam was released on 13 June 2003.

Synopsis

Durairaj (Sarath Kumar) is a lorry driver who is tough as a nail. He had a bitter childhood and has no relatives or friends and his only solace is Jayaram (Jayaram), his cleaner who is just the opposite of him. Jayaram is a happy-go-lucky guy who dots on his mother (Vadivukarasi), wife Mallika (Meena) and daughter and dreams of making enough money to build a small house for his family. Durai and Jayaram share a special bond, as they understand each other well.

Naattamai (Sarathkumar) is a very kind-hearted, disciplined man. He sits on the ancestral throne in his village to do justice (similar to panchayat). He hears all the cases and gives solutions and punishments to the wrong-doers. His wife, Khushboo admires and respects him a lot. His brothers Pasupathi (sarathkumar) and Raja Ravindra fear for him and also have a lot of respect for him as he has brought them up as his children. The young Sarathkumar marries Meena, daughter of an industrialist. She at first never liked Naatamai and her husband for being so timid before his brother but later transforms after knowing his greatness from her father.Raja Ravindra loves his paternal cousin(Ponnambalam)'s daughter (Sanghavi). In the flashback, Periya Naatamai(Vijayakumar) father of naatamai orders Ponnambalam to marry his servant's daughter whom he raped, though he is his sister's son. His brother-in-law shoots at him as he is disappointed by his verdict.Enraged Periya Naatamai gives his final verdict before dying to abandon their family and whoever visits his house will receive the same punishment and also not to share even a glass of water with them. Ponnambalam from then builds envy on his uncle's family and waits for an opportunity to take revenge on them. He plans to bring a lady (Subhashri) as a teacher to the school in the village and tells her to make young Sarathkumar fall for her. She does so to save her father who is in the hands of Ponnambalam. He kills her and makes the villagers believe that Sarathkumar has done this. Naatamai sentences 10 years of exile for his brother's family. Now Ponnambalam comes to know of his daughter's love and tries to kill Raja Ravindra with the help of his goons. Sarathkumar goes in rescue of him and pregnant Meena goes to Naatamai to convey this message. Manorama rushes to Nattamai and reveals the truth and tells that he punished his brother without committing any mistake. Naatamai takes revenge on Ponnambalam and dies on knowing that he gave a wrong verdict. Now younger Sarathkumar is shown taking the ancestral throne from his brother.

A kind-hearted Zamindar (Rajinikanth) lived with his sister-in-law and cousin Rajasekhar (Raghuvaran), helping people incessantly. His sister-in-law has a son, to whom the Zamindar bequeaths a major portion of his property. At this juncture, a new baby is born to the Zamindar. His wife dies soon after. Brother Rajasekhar cheats the Zamindar as he fears that his son's property might be taken back and given to the Zamindar's own son. When the cheating comes to light, the Zamindar hands over all his property and his baby to his sister-in-law and brother and goes to the Himalayas, making his sister-in-law promise him that the baby should be brought up as a servant, not as a Zamindar. The film starts in a courtroom where a Brahmin woman Janaki (Meena) is fighting for divorce from her husband Pandian (Kamal Haasan). She offers various reasons for wanting a divorce. She has married Pandian against the wishes of her rich father Vishwanathan Iyer (Gemini Ganesan). But she isn't able to come to terms with living in Pandian's small house without amenities. Pandian is an assistant dance director with a modest income and is not able to spend much time with the family. All this accumulates and Janaki decides to apply for divorce, which is granted. The court orders that Pandian can meet his daughter Barathi, once a week and this is his only solace. His daughter, however, loves him a lot and doesn't like the arrangement.

Chinnaiya (Sarath Kumar) is a faithful servant in the house of a rich man (Vijayakumar). The rich man is angry with his elder daughter (Sitara), who yearns to mend their relationship. His second daughter, Prabhavathy (Simran Bagga), who arrives from America, falls in love with Chinnaiya but after gaining his trust, accuses him of attempting to rape her. Thenali Soman (Kamal Hassan) is a man who fears anything and everything.
