Panchagni (English: Five Fires) (Malayalam:പഞ്ചാഗ്നി) is a 1986 Malayalam film scripted by M.T. Vasudevan Nair and directed by Hariharan, music by Bombay Ravi and lyrics by O N V Kurup. It stars Geetha, Mohanlal, Nadia Moidu and Thilakan.

A remarkable tale of a remarkable woman, who puts her commitment to social activism above everything else, including her own love for an adoring man. Under the direction of Hariharan, Geetha made a sensational debut in Malayalam in one of the most powerful female characters in Indian cinema ever. It is one of the classics in Malayalam cinema. The film was remade in Tamil as Nyaya Tharasu (1989).

Synopsis

The movie revolves round the incidents in a two-week period, when Indira (Geetha), a Naxal activist is out in parole. She is serving life sentence in the central jail, Kannore after being charged for the murder of Avarachan, a landlord, who she had witnessed kill a young tribal woman after she was raped and impregnated (by him).

Unnikrishan (Vijayakumar), a simple, innocent, easy going chap joins Government Law College. He along with first year students are ragged by the seniors under the leadership of Pappan (Ashokan). A student leader with strong political clout, Pappan violently thrashes down Unnikrishnan who opposes the ragging. Later again, he is insulted in front of the girls. Unnikrishnan stabs Pappan at the corridor of the college in retaliation. G. Panneer Selvam (Vijayakanth), an honest cop, gathers enough evidence against a local goon Arumai Nayagam a.k.a. Annachi (Thilakan). Annachi is sent to prison. Annachi avenges his arrest by killing Panneer Selvam's wife (Revathi). Since then, ACP Panneer Selvam quits the Police force and takes care of his children renting an apartment owned by V.K Ramaswamy. Bhanupriya (VK Ramaswamy's grand daughter) gets introduced to Panner Selvam's children and starts mingling with them eventually falling in love with Panneer Selvam. Meanwhile, Arumai Nayagam is released from the prison and realizes that he doesn't carry the same respect as he used to before going to jail. His anger against Panneer Selvam doesn't cease. Arumai Nayagam challenges Panneer Selvam to join the police again and try to fight him again. Panneer Selvam initially rejects the offer. Arumai Nayagam tries to provoke Panneer Selvam by attacking his home and son. Out of frustration over son's attack, Panneer Selvam joins the Police again and fights Arumai Nayagam again. ACP Panner Selvam's fight against Arumai Nayagam forms the rest of the plot.
