En 1820 à Séville en Andalousie, l'histoire devenue célèbre de Don José (Jean Marais), brigadier des dragons, amoureux fou de Carmen (Viviane Romance), une belle et provocante gitane qui l'a séduit au point qu'il déserte pour elle. Dans un excès de jalousie, Don José tue son commandant et s'enfuit avec elle dans les montagnes, devenant lui-même le chef d'une bande de contrebandiers. Carmen parvient à aider certains de ses amis contrebandiers dont Garcia (Lucien Coëdel). Mais Carmen se lasse vite de cet amant qu'elle estime un peu trop transi et s'échappe avec le séduisant toréador Lucas (Julien Bertheau). Don José parvient à la retrouver et, une fois de plus aveuglé par la jalousie, commet l'irréparable en tuant Carmen.

The film is biographical, telling the story of the life and artistic struggles of the French composer Hector Berlioz. Berlioz is shown as a recalcitrant medical student in an anatomy class dreaming of becoming a composer; at a demonstration during a performance at the Paris Opéra conducted by Habeneck; at supper with other young artists (Hugo, Janin, Dumas, Mérimée, Delacroix); and chasing after his future wife Harriet Smithson, after a performance of Hamlet. Also depicted are his life in a garret, while suffering from an illness due to an abscess in the throat; a visit from his mother who curses him; and the composition of the Symphonie fantastique. The film then shows his marital breakdown, the premiere of his opera Benvenuto Cellini, his travels throughout Europe, his second marriage to Marie Recio (called "Marie Martin" in the film), public acceptance in old age and reconciliation with his son.

On Moonlight Bay centers on the character Marjorie Winfield, a tomboy played by Doris Day. When the Winfield family moves into a new house in a small town in Indiana, the daughter, Marjorie, begins a romance with the boy next door, William Sherman, played by Gordon MacRae. Marjorie has to learn how to dance and behave like a proper young lady. Larry Martin (Don Ameche) is an American entertainer in the Casino Samba in Rio de Janeiro. He has a skit in his show, making fun of the womanizing Baron Manuel Duarte (also Ameche). On one particular evening, the Baron and his wife, Baroness Cecilia Duarte (Alice Faye) come to see Larry's impersonation. To the surprise of the couple, the act is amazingly realistic. George Pearson, an employee at an underwear factory, is caught between his modern wife and his meddling mother. After buying a special yarn and getting his wife to promote it, he has an argument with his boss, Mr Dawson who insults Pearson's wife and refuses to apologise. Pearson then resigns. After finding out that the yarn is actually worth a fair amount, Mr Dawson tries to buy it from Pearson but he has some competition.
