Synopsis

Sicily, 1943, before the Allied assault in July. A pair of American commandos parachute inside the island for a secret mission. En Italie, après la fin de la Seconde Guerre mondiale, deux architectes, Marco et Paola font connaissance. Paola est séduite par les idées progressistes de Marco et y adhère. During a debate in Naples' town hall during the early 80s Pasquale Picone, a former Italsider (Italy's then state-owned steel company) worker who had recently lost his job pulls out a jerrycan of gasoline and sets himself alight in front of the Municipal Council, his wife and her three kids are unable to find out where he has been taken after an ambulance arrives with unusual haste and disappears with him on board. Desperate for news about her husband, the woman hires an unlikely kind of 'private eye' (Giancarlo Giannini), in the form of Salvatore Cannavacciuolo, a man who ekes out a living giving informations to people visiting the morgue for one thousand lire apiece. During his investigations Salvatore (who had his less than noble motivations to accept the task) finds out that Pasquale never worked for Italsider, he merely pretended to so; that way he could hide from his own family the fact that he was involved into a veritable web of deals ranging from contraband, to gambling and to outright criminal enterprises linked to the 'Camorra' (the Neapolitan version of the Mob) and its underground. Hoping to profit from this knowledge Salvatore delves deeper and deeper into Picone's secret life with results ranging from the farcical to the dangerous in a movie which can be seen as one of the very last examples of the Commedia all'Italiana genre (here hybridized with the detective story).

The four Tuscan friends now have over sixty years of age and are nearing retirement. Count Mascetti is always the most unfortunate because in addition to end up in a wheelchair has also lost his wife in an incident. So his friends not to make him suffer the lead in a nursing home, where, however Mascetti never ceases to make his jokes to patients and nurses, very fun with his "supercazzola". Soon, the architect Melandri and the bartender Necchi reach the hospice to keep him company and participate with him in the jokes and antics against the elderly hospice. In particular, the man targeted by three, also included the surgeon Sassaroli, an old man (Bernard Blier) who dreams of the youth, and so the four friends give him well-served setting up a scene similar to the wastelands of Hell. There is the old man and conducted with a subset of satanic ritual in which Sassaroli plays the priest and a prostitute is very young sacrificial victim, believes young again. In fact, the four friends pranksters and goliardic have painted the hair black man after he fell asleep. The next day the old man feels like reborn and starts to make a lot of exercises dangerous for a man of his age, dying of a heart attack in a short time.

Alberto has an unbearable wife who treats him like a nerd and that forces him to satisfy every whim of her. But Alberto decides to get respect and to prove his masculinity, initially destroying the cello's wife, the oject that she loved, and after betraying her with a young woman. When the wife deliberately shatters an important deal with a rich and Alberto old widow, her husband is about to kill her in despair, but he is resoundingly beaten by his wife and sent to the hospital. At the end of the story Alberto remains meek as a child and his wife will decide his every move in the future.
