Rajinikanth finds himself to be an orphan. He travels from his village to Madras. There he meets Janakaraj, who gives him a job. By some magical situation, Rajni discovers himself to be a son of a dead millionaire—through Visu. Visu is the guardian of Rajni's father's trust. If Rajni wants his inheritance, he has to follow certain rules. He can get an inheritance of ₹3000 crore if he can spend ₹30 crore in a month. The three conditions are: no contributions to charities, not to own any assets at the end of the month, and, above all, no one else must know. If Rajni fails to spend the money according to the rules, all the money will go to his father's trust which is managed by V.K.Ramasamy, "Nizhalgal" Ravi, Kitty and Raghuvaran. These four form a team of "villains". They want to spoil Rajni's efforts and get all the money for the trust and then to loot the money. Rambha is Visu's daughter and she is appointed as the accountant for Rajni for 30 days.

Adhering to its title 'Cinema Paithiyam', the movie depicts and traces the life and transformation of Jaya (Jayachitra) from the reel world to the real world. So obsessed is she with movies and the movie world, that she worships the popular film hero Jai Shankar, believing all that he portrays on screen, to be his real self. He becomes the ideal man of her dreams, and she even tattoos his name in her arm. Rajasekaran (Major Sundarrajan) is a rich man who is in possession of an antique sword that holds the key to a treasure. Nagalingam (Thengai Srinivasan), a criminal, makes several unsuccessful attempts to steal the sword from Rajasekaran. On one such attempts Anand (Jaishankar) saves Rajasekaran and becomes his trusted guy to protect the sword. Raju(Rajnikanth), an orphan who is being raised by an alcoholic, ex-thief Rajasingam (M.N Nambiar), is an expert in boosting cars and Anita (##Anita Raj) is his love interest. Several years back Rajasingam had stolen a car owned by Nagalingam with a child inside without knowing that the car and the child (Raju) actually belonged to Rajasekaran. One day Rajasingam spots Nagalingam in a shopping complex and believing that Raju is the son of Nagalingam, he hands Raju to him as his own son. Nagalingam deceitfully accepts Raju as his son and cleverly employs him to steal the sword from Rajasekaran, his real father. While Raju attempts to steal the sword, Anand keeps thwarting him. Despite Anand's efforts Raju manages to loot the sword but then discovers that he's actually the son of Rajasekaran and he himself had been instrumental in stealing his own family treasure for the wrong men. With the help of Anand, Raju fights with Nagalingam's gang to successfully retrieve their family treasure and reunites with his family.

Badri (Vijay) is the youngest son of a family and a careless guy, always going around girls and enjoying with them. His womanizing habits are a source of heartburn for his father (Kitty). However, his elder brother, Vetri (Riyaz Khan), a kickboxer and his father's favourite son, is very fond of him. Janu (Bhumika Chawla), Badri's neighbour, is in love with him, but it is just one sided as Badri considers her a good friend and a source of money and cars to impress girls (Janu's father is a garage owner). He falls in love with Mamathi (Monal), a rich girl, and poses as a rich guy to impress her. However, she soon finds out Badri has lied to her. Mamathi dumps Badri and insults him in front of his father. Badri's father, tired of his son's antics, disowns him. Later Vetri is attacked by his enemies and is bedridden, unable to take part in the kickboxing championship. Badri decides to fight for his brother and to redeem himself in his father's eyes by fighting in the championship match against Rohit (Bhupinder Singh), who happens to be Mamathi's new boyfriend. He defeats Rohit, redeems himself in front of his father's eyes and finally accepts Janu's love.
