Raja Mukthi (Tamil: இராஜ முக்தி) is a Tamil language film starring M. K. Thyagaraja Bhagavathar, V. N. Janaki and P. Bhanumathi in the lead roles. M. G. Ramachandran had done a supporting role. The film was released on 9 October 1948.

Synopsis

King Rajendra Varman and Queen Mrinalini are reigning the Vyjayanti empire. Mahendra Varman is the rival and the neighbouring king. Kannika is the minister’s daughter, who is in love with King Rajendra Varman and aims to attain him at any cost.

Marziana (P. Bhanumathi) is a dancer in Baghdad. The tyrant Sher Khan, commander of the notorious king Amir Kasim Khan (M. G. Chakrapani), tries to take her by force to his palace. She is rescued by Ali Baba (M. G. Ramachandran), who fights with Sher Khan and vanquishes him. Marziana and her sidekick Dowlat (K. Sarangkapani) find refuge in Ali Baba’s house. Alibaba is an impoverished woodcutter and lives with his sister Ayisha (P. Susheela) and servant Bulbul (M. N. Rajam). Marziana learns that they are the siblings of Kasim, who had driven them out at the instigation of his cruel wife Salima (Vidyavati). Marziana and Ali Baba later fall in love.

The film is based on an age-old Buddhist folktale connected with Mauryan Emperor Ashoka's son Kunal. The Mauryan prince Kunal was courted by Ashoka's younger queen Tishyarakshita and when he rejected her advances, was falsely accused by the queen of trying to seduce her and was thrown into prison and blinded. The story, however, comes to a happy end with his eyesight being restored by Lord Buddha and the king acquits of all the charges.

Vijayapuram is a beautiful hillside hamlet appears serene and restful to a casual passerby. But the happenings there are far from tranquil. Maruthanaatu Ilavarasi is a well-woven story about a king (Veerappa) with two wives (one played by Saraswathi and the other does not appear in the movie!) and an evil-minded Minister (Chakrapani) whose sister is the younger queen. The two become pregnant and the evil genius persuades the king to believe that the senior queen had poisoned the junior queen out of sheer jealousy which the king tends to believe, but does not take any action. The frustrated Minister tries to eliminate the pregnant queen but she is saved by a courtier whom the Minister kills. The pregnant queen escapes many trials and gives birth to a son (MGR). He grows up and meets a young woman (Janaki) and her friend (Nagaratnam) and falls in love unaware that she is a princess. Their love grows and when he comes to know that she is a princess, he begins to distance himself from her. After many trials, the two come together and live happily.

Swaroop Singh (O. A. K. Thevar) won the respect and loyalty of the people of Senji during his rule where Hindus and Muslims lived in peace and prosperity. A son was born to Swaroop Singh and his wife Rambai (Rushyendramani), whom they named Tej Singh pronounced as Desingu (MGR) in Tamil. Swaroop Singh has a secret wife called Jaan Bibi (Lakshmiprabha), and they have a son called Dawood Khan (MGR) who was a little older than Desingu. Fearing that Dawood might pose a threat to the succession of the throne in years to come, on the advice of his commander and close confidant Yusuf Khan (T. K. Ramachandran), Swaroop Singh persuades Jaan Bibi to leave Senji, taking little Dawood with her.
