Rumba is a 1935 musical drama film starring George Raft as a Cuban dancer and Carole Lombard as a Manhattan socialite. The movie was directed by Marion Gering and is considered an unsuccessful follow-up to Raft and Lombard's smash hit Bolero the previous year.

Synopsis

Famed dance team, Veloz and Yolanda were uncredited choreographers for this film, while the signature rumba danced near the end by Raft and Lombard seems to be a simplified variation of rumba performed by Veloz and Yolanda themselves the year before in another Paramount film starring George Burns and Gracie Allen, "Many Happy Returns."

The film opens shortly before World War I. Raoul De Baere (Raft) is a dancer from New York City, aiming to become king of the European nightclub circuit. He tries to get Annette (famed exotic dancer Sally Rand) to be his dancing partner, but she refuses. He recruits Helen Hathaway (Lombard) instead and devises a very athletic routine to be accompanied by Ravel's Boléro (an anachronism, as the composition was not written until 1928).

Au sortir de prison, Joe Dennis, gangster repenti, est engagé dans un grand magasin dont le directeur recrute une partie de son personnel chez les anciens détenus afin d’aider à leur réinsertion professionnelle et morale. Aussi fait-elle tout pour tenir cette union secrète. Quand Joe découvre la vérité, il revient auprès de ses anciens complices, avec lesquels il avait rompu, et se prépare à cambrioler le magasin. Mais Helen parvient à convaincre la bande de renoncer à son projet, en expliquant, craie en main au tableau noir, que « le crime ne paie pas ». Un enfant scellera bientôt l’amour d’Helen et de Joe, en présence de tous leurs amis réunis à la maternité.
