Saathi (Hindi: साथी ) is a 1968 Hindi Romantic drama film written and directed by C. V. Sridhar. The film starred Vyjayanthimala and Rajendra Kumar in the lead with Simi Garewal, Pahari Sanyal, David Abraham Cheulkar, Veena and Ram Mohan as the ensemble cast while prominent actors such as Shashi Kapoor, Nanda, Sanjeev Kumar, Shabnam, D.K. Sapru and Pratima Devi done a guest appearance. The film was produced by S. Krishnamurthy of Venus Pictures. The film's score was composed by Naushad with lyrics were provided by Majrooh Sultanpuri and Shakeel Badayuni, edited by N. M. Shankar and was filmed by Marcus Bartley. Saathi is a triangular love story among Ravi, Shanti and Rajni. The film was a remake of 1961 Tamil film Palum Pazhamum which was directed by A. Bhimsingh and starred by Sivaji Ganesan, B. Saroja Devi and Sowcar Janaki.

Synopsis

Dr. Ravi returns from abroad and takes up position as Chief Surgeon in a hospital. He then meets with Nurse Shanti, who lives an impoverished lifestyle with her ailing mother, and decides to perform surgery, but she passes away, and a guilt-ridden Ravi marries Shanti much to the chagrin of his mentor, Kaka, who had hoped that he would marry his daughter, Rajni. The couple then travel to Kashmir for their honey-moon, and then settle down to a harmonious relationship. Hoping to travel even more, their plans are interrupted by the hospital's head doctor, who wants Ravi to focus on cancer research. The couple drop all travel plans and immerse themselves in research so much so that Shanti herself becomes ill, and not wanting to become a burden, leaves. A frantic Ravi searches high and low in vain, and is subsequently devastated to learn that she has perished in a train accident. Kaka then becomes very ill and Kaki tells Ravi that the cause of his illness is Rajni's insistence that she not marry anyone except Ravi. As a result, Ravi marries her but is unable to get Shanti out of his mind.

Raj (Gemini Ganesan) meets Shanti (Vyjayanthimala) at a cricket match in Madras, and falls in love with her. Shanti does not reciprocate his love, and leaves to her home place Bangalore. Shanti’s father Sokkalingam (K. A. Thangavelu), a widower, marries Thangam (M. Saroja). They decide to go to Kashmir for their honeymoon, and Shanti also wants to come. Sivalingam, a friend of Sokkalingam suggests an alliance between Shanti and his nephew Raj (M. N. Nambiar) who is now in Madras. Raj has secretly married Lalitha. He ditches Lalitha, when he sees this new alliance and leaves for Bangalore, but misses the train. Just then Raj (Gemini Ganesan) arrives in Bangalore for a different reason, and Sokkalingam misinterprets him as his friend’s nephew. Sokkalingam and wife Thangam leave for Kashmir along with Raj Ganesan and Shanti, who still dislikes Raj Ganesan.

Vasantpur is a small princely state adjacent to India. Raj (Raj Kapoor) and Vasanti (Vyjayanthimala) are college mates who clash when she complains to the college principal about a love letter he sent her. Later on realizing her mistake, Vasanti apologizes to him and the two fall in love. Vasanti's elder sister, Geeta (Usha Kiron), supports the family by stitching clothes. Raj rents the room upstairs in their house. He falls ill and in nursing him, Geeta falls in love with him. She confides her love to Vasanti, who decides to sacrifice her love for her the sake of her sister and convinces Raj to marry Geeta. Raj initially neglects Geeta. On finding out, Vasanti writes to him that their sacrifice, made for Geeta's happiness, would mean nothing unless he is a good husband to Geeta. Raj relents and Geeta and he have a son. Vasanti joins them and Geeta suspects that there is something on between Raj and Vasanti and makes Vasanti leave the house. A few years later Geeta, having found out that Raj and Vasanti loved each other, dies in guilt leaving Raj alone to bring up their child making him promise that he will make Vasanti the child's mother. Raj learns of Vasanti's impanding marriage to her former boss (Gemini Ganesh). By the time he reaches there, Vasanti is already married. He hands over his child to Vasanti as a wedding gift and walks away.

Sita (Meena Kumari) is married to Ram (Raj Kumar) who is diagnosed to have cancer. Ram is admitted to a hospital where he is to be treated by Dr. Dharmesh (Rajendra Kumar). Dr. Dharmesh is Sita's former love and both of them are very much uncomfortable to interact in front of Sita's husband. Sita suspects that Dr. Dharmesh will not be able to give her husband a fair treatment because of his love interest in her. When she mentions this to him he promises her that he will try his best to save her husband. Ram overhears this conversation and later suggests to Sita that she should get married to Dr. Dharmesh after his death. Ram is to undergo a major surgery under Dr. Dharmesh which will decide his fate. Dr. Dharmesh seized with a feeling that he can't afford to fail in this surgery as it might seem that he was biased due to Sita. He works hard for the preparation of the surgery, without proper food/sleep for a long time. Finally at the end the surgery takes place. Dr. Dharmesh comes out from the operation theater and tells Sita that the operation was successful and her husband is safe. He takes couple of steps forward and collapses. Long days of hard work for the preparation of surgery takes its toll, and he dies on the spot. Last scene shows Ram and Sita at the inauguration of a hospital built in Dr. Dharmesh's memory. Dr. Dharmesh's mother inaugurates his statue and everybody places flowers there.

Sreekanth is a famous psychiatrist and has earned much praise from his mentor and people in the town. He is in love with Venniradai Nirmala. One day he is assigned a task to cure a mentally unstable women (Jayalalitha) who lives in Ooty. Srikanth informs about this to her lover and request her to wait for him until he finishes this case. Srikanth promises he will return for her and sets out to Ooty. On arriving, he is been welcomed by Jayalalaitha's parents who are very much distressed with their daughter's condition. Srikanth questions them about her past but they conceal initially as it might have a severe consequence on her future. Upon reiteration that knowing her past will be very useful for him to cure her, Jayalalitha parents reveal her awful past. Jayalalitha at a very young age got married and within hours, the couple meet with an accident and her spouse dies. Due to the aftermath of the accident and upon learning her husband's death, Jayalalitha loses her mental stability. As days pass by, Srikanth cures her for good. Her parents are happy on learning that Jayalalitha has completely forgotten her past to begin a new life. Jayalalitha begins to fall in love with Srikanth but is reluctant to profess her love to him, instead she tells her parents. Srikanth upon learning this fears that she might go back to her old condition if she learns that a girl is awaiting him. Srikanth having no courage, informs about this to Jayalalitha's parents. Srikanth marries Venniradai Nirmala and Jayalalitha on the other hand tells she indeed remembers her past and wears a white saree (tradition where in women wears a white saree after her spouse death) and convinces herself that this her destiny.
