Synopsis

In 1941, in Mei-Ki, China, war profiteer David Jones (Alan Ladd) narrowly escapes with his life when Chinese Captain Tao-Yuan-Kai arrests him for selling oil to the Japanese but releases him because he is American. On Christmas Eve, Jim prepares to give his last performance as part of the act before marrying Lila and retiring with her to a farm in Connecticut. In the Gay Nineties, on New York's Bowery, saloon owner Chuck Connors (Beery), finds that his rival, Steve Brodie (Raft), has thrown a muskmelon at his window. The happy-go-lucky Brodie explains that he threw the melon on a dare. As Connors threatens to fight him, the two learn of a fire in neighboring Chinatown. Both men call upon their volunteer fire brigades, and wager $100 on which will be the first to throw water on the fire.

Son capitaine, Bull Brackett, tombe amoureux de Rose et lui donne sa cabine. Il accepte de débarquer Fah Wong à Seattle, et il y apprend que Rose est recherchée pour le meurtre de Chan Lo. Sœur Annie Alden, qui a embarqué à Seattle, est outrée par la moralité de Rose, mais lorsqu'Annie tombe malade, c'est Rose qui la soigne, impressionnée par la nature charitable de la jeune femme.
