Although well qualified, Ram Chand (Amitabh Bachchan) is unable to obtain suitable employment, and works as a peon in an organization. One day he meets with Ravi Chand, who is on the verge of committing suicide, he counsels him against this, as well as permits him to live with him. Ravi gets employed in the same office as Ram, albeit as a Manager, and falls in love and marries a co-worker named Lata (Farida Jalal). Ram's parents would like him to get married too, and he goes to see them and meets his bride-to-be, Kusum Sharma (Tanuja). Ram sends a photograph of Kusum for approval to Ravi and Lata, and is disappointed to learn that Ravi does not approve of Kusum. When Ram attempts to find out the reason behind his disapproval, Ravi gives very elusive responses, and Ram takes it upon himself to find out why Ravi disapproves of Kusum so much. It is then Ram will come to know of the shocking truth behind the relationship between Kusum and Ravi, and about Kusum's reputation.

Amit Srivastav (Amitabh Bachchan) and Sheela Srivastav (Moushumi Chatterjee) are married to each other and live with their son. One night on their way to a party, they encounter a murder of a press reporter, although Amit was not able to catch a glimpse of the killer. After helping the stabbed victim to the hospital, Amit begins to receive anonymous threats. He also gets a torn part of an invitation near the place of the attempted murder which he keeps, assuming it could lead to the killer. The killer kidnaps Amit's son and demands the evidence that he has got. The only way to save his child is to unravel the mystery of the killer's identity. Babu is a young man who works as a rickshaw puller and he has fallen in love with Kammo.His only true friend is Shambu Nath.One day he helps Shankerlal and his family and in return Shankerlal invites him to his house.Instantly the whole family including Shankerlal's wife and Pinky both begin to shower love on Babu. Babu having led a tough childhood feels very ecstatic and feels grateful to Shankerlal on having provided him food,clothes and more importantly respect given to him. After his release he finds Pinky begging in the streets and then he gets shocked as to how a rich girl has been forced to beg. Then he realises that now Pinky's mother is a widow. His sole aim now becomes to help this widow and her child. He gives up his personal life, drives a hand-drawn rickshaw, saves some money, so that he can buy provisions for them, as well as send the child, Pinky, to a decent school. Pinky then grows up and later starts disliking Babu.The rest of the story is how Pinky realises her folly later on, how Pinky's mother feels indebted to Babu for having helped them in return for one nights shower of affection on Babu by Shankerlal.

Mili (Jaya Bhaduri) is a story about a girl who suffers from pernicious anemia, a disease considered untreatable during the period the film was produced. Maharaj Singh is a proud owner of several derby-winning stallions, and lives in a palatial farmhouse with his wife, Rukmini and young son, Chimpoo. One day dacoits attack his farmhouse with a view of stealing the stallions, but Maharaj fights them, killing the son of the leader of the dacoits, Maan Singh. Maan Singh swears to avenge the death of his son, and abducts Chimpoo. Years later, a servant of Maharaj, Ram Singh, brings a young man named Badal into the Singhs lives, and tells them that he is their missing son Chimpoo. Both Maharaj, Rukmini, and their daughter, Sunita, are delighted at having Chimpoo back in their lives. Then Badal and Sunita fall in love with each other. It is then Badal confesses to Maharaj that he is not Chimpoo, but a former convicted jailbird, who was asked to impersonate him by an embittered Ram Singh. Maharaj does not want to relay this information to an ailing Rukmini, and decides to keep it quiet for the rest of their lives.
