Synopsis
Fortunato Assante (Leo Gullotta) is an out work/out of money actor. He agrees to take a job teaching drama at a reform school. After some hesitation he realizes the potential and ability of various students, and has pity for the lives these kids have lived on the streets.Actors

En Italie, après la fin de la Seconde Guerre mondiale, deux architectes, Marco et Paola font connaissance. Paola est séduite par les idées progressistes de Marco et y adhère. Ils se marient, mais les naissances successives de leurs quatre fils amènent Paola à quitter son travail pour les élever. Marco se sent délaissé, puis le temps qui passe use petit à petit sa ferveur sociale et il entame une liaison avec une collègue de travail. Les problèmes engendrés par l'éducation des enfants selon une nouvelle méthode provoquent l'hospitalisation de Paola pour dépression nerveuse. During a debate in Naples' town hall during the early 80s Pasquale Picone, a former Italsider (Italy's then state-owned steel company) worker who had recently lost his job pulls out a jerrycan of gasoline and sets himself alight in front of the Municipal Council, his wife and her three kids are unable to find out where he has been taken after an ambulance arrives with unusual haste and disappears with him on board. Desperate for news about her husband, the woman hires an unlikely kind of 'private eye' (Giancarlo Giannini), in the form of Salvatore Cannavacciuolo, a man who ekes out a living giving informations to people visiting the morgue for one thousand lire apiece. During his investigations Salvatore (who had his less than noble motivations to accept the task) finds out that Pasquale never worked for Italsider, he merely pretended to so; that way he could hide from his own family the fact that he was involved into a veritable web of deals ranging from contraband, to gambling and to outright criminal enterprises linked to the 'Camorra' (the Neapolitan version of the Mob) and its underground. Hoping to profit from this knowledge Salvatore delves deeper and deeper into Picone's secret life with results ranging from the farcical to the dangerous in a movie which can be seen as one of the very last examples of the Commedia all'Italiana genre (here hybridized with the detective story).

The four Tuscan friends now have over sixty years of age and are nearing retirement. Count Mascetti is always the most unfortunate because in addition to end up in a wheelchair has also lost his wife in an incident. So his friends not to make him suffer the lead in a nursing home, where, however Mascetti never ceases to make his jokes to patients and nurses, very fun with his "supercazzola". Soon, the architect Melandri and the bartender Necchi reach the hospice to keep him company and participate with him in the jokes and antics against the elderly hospice. In particular, the man targeted by three, also included the surgeon Sassaroli, an old man (Bernard Blier) who dreams of the youth, and so the four friends give him well-served setting up a scene similar to the wastelands of Hell. There is the old man and conducted with a subset of satanic ritual in which Sassaroli plays the priest and a prostitute is very young sacrificial victim, believes young again. In fact, the four friends pranksters and goliardic have painted the hair black man after he fell asleep. The next day the old man feels like reborn and starts to make a lot of exercises dangerous for a man of his age, dying of a heart attack in a short time.

Alberto has an unbearable wife who treats him like a nerd and that forces him to satisfy every whim of her.
