L'action se passe à Paris. Gobette est chanteuse et danseuse vedette au Moulin Rouge. Un juge d'instruction mandaté par un président de tribunal de province est envoyé sur place suite à des plaintes de citoyens pour outrages aux bonnes mœurs. Gobette parvint à le séduire et il passe une nuit d'amour ensemble si mouvementée que les voisins s'en plaignent. Le président Tricoin après avoir écouté le rapport du juge d'instruction et l'aveu de son écart, exige l'expulsion de Gobette. Celle-ci. Gobette n'est pas décidé à se laisser faire, apprenant que la femme et la fille du président sont absentes, elle se fait introduire chez lui et commence son travail de séduction. Mais voici que survient le garde des sceaux en tournée d'inspection. Gobette se fait passer pour la femme du président Tricoin, propose que l'on héberge le ministre pour la nuit et le séduit.

Horace Parker, un jeune et riche égoïste, a accepté de financer un système de communication avec Mars à condition d'être crédité comme son inventeur. Un soir, il reste chez lui pour en étudier les plans plutôt que d'aller à une soirée avec Minnie, sa fiancée. Comme il s'endort, un personnage lui apparaît, qui se présente comme un messager en provenance de Mars, dont la mission est de convertir l'homme le plus égoïste de la Terre. In September 1963, Seymour Krelborn (Rick Moranis) and his colleague, Audrey (Ellen Greene), work at Mushnik's Flower Shop, lamenting they cannot escape the slums of New York City, living in a run-down, beat up neighborhood referred to as "Skid Row." Struggling from a lack of customers, Mr. Mushnik (Vincent Gardenia) prompts to close the store, only for Audrey to suggest displaying an unusual plant Seymour owns. Immediately attracting a customer, Seymour explains he bought the plant, which he dubbed "Audrey II", from a Chinese flower shop during a solar eclipse. Attracting business to Mushnik's shop, the plant soon starts dying, worrying Seymour. Accidentally pricking his finger, he then discovers Audrey II needs human blood to thrive.

A man frozen for 65 years is found in the ice of the North Pole by a scientific polar expedition. While he is brought back to life by professor Edouard Lauriebat (Michael Lonsdale), the man is identified as Paul Fournier, who was exploring the pole in 1905 and is now, thanks to hibernation, a 90 years old young man. Edmée de Tartas (Claude Gensac), born Fournier, is identified as the granddaughter of Paul and convinces her husband, Hubert Barrère de Tartas (Louis de Funès), that Paul must be given back to his family, while the government wishes to treat Paul as a research subject. After a kidnapping and a pursuit, the authorities reluctantly agree, but impose, for the sake of Paul's mental health, that his environment be the same as in 1905. As Paul thinks Edmée is his mother, Hubert must play the role of a man courting Edmée and Didier (Olivier de Funès), the son of Edmée and Hubert plays the role of a student living with the family. First under control, the situation gradually deteriorates especially when Paul's actions become a threat to Hubert's plan to marry his son to the daughter of Crepin-Jaujard, one of his business partners.

The story begins in 1973 Moscow, where Engineer Aleksandr (Shurik) Timofeev (Aleksandr Demyanenko) is working on a time machine in his apartment. By accident, he sends Ivan Vasilevich Bunsha (Yuri Yakovlev), superintendent of his apartment building, and George Miloslavsky (Leonid Kuravlev), a small-time burglar, back into the time of Ivan IV "The Terrible". The pair is forced to disguise themselves, with Bunsha dressing up as Ivan IV and Miloslavsky as a knyaz of the same name. At the same time, the real Ivan IV (also played by Yuri Yakovlev) is sent by the same machine into Shurik's apartment, he has to deal with modern-day life while Shurik tries to fix the machine so that everyone can be brought back to their proper place in time. Superintendent Bunsha and Tzar Ivan IV the Terrible are lookalikes but have completely different personalities, which results in funny situations of mistaken identity. As the police (tipped off by a neighbor who was burgled by Miloslavsky) close in on Shurik, who is frantically trying to repair the machine, the cover of Bunsha and Miloslavsky is blown and they have to fight off the Streltsy, who have figured out that Bunsha is an impostor. The movie ends with Bunsha, Miloslavsky, and Ivan IV all transported back to their proper places, although the entire episode is revealed to be a dream by Shurik.
