Astronauts Taylor (Charlton Heston), Landon (Robert Gunner), Dodge (Jeff Burton) and Stewart are in deep hibernation when their spaceship crashes in a lake on an unknown planet after a long near-light speed voyage, during which, due to time dilation, the crew ages only 18 months. As the ship sinks, Taylor finds Stewart dead and her body desiccated. They throw an inflatable raft from the ship and climb down into it; before departing the ship, Taylor notes that the date is November 25, AD 3978, approximately two millennia after their departure in 1972. Once ashore, Dodge performs a soil test and pronounces the soil incapable of sustaining life.

Irish-Australian Paddy Carmody (Robert Mitchum) is a sheep drover and shearer, roving the sparsely-populated back country with his wife Ida (Deborah Kerr) and son Sean (Michael Anderson, Jr.). L'agence crypto-zoologique Monarch déploie de nombreux moyens pour combattre des créatures de tailles divines, appelées Titans. Ces derniers réapparaissent petit à petit des entrailles de la terre. La paléobiologiste Emma Russell, travaillant pour Monarch, a été traumatisée par la mort de son fils Andrew en 2014. Elle a mis au point l'Orca, jadis imaginé avec son ex-mari Mark, une machine qui permet de capter et reproduire les signaux émis par les Titans. Son invention attire des convoitises. Emma entraine avec elle sa fille Madison. Son père, Mark va tout faire pour retrouver sa fille, tout en tentant de survivre dans un monde envahi de monstres. Godzilla va ainsi devoir compter sur une alliée, le papillon géant Mothra pour affronter les 2 menaces que représentent le ptérosaure super-rapide Rodan, ainsi que son pire ennemi, le dragon à trois têtes King Ghidorah, qui est l'Alpha des Titans. Ces anciennes super-espèces veulent toutes la suprématie et mettent en danger la survie de l'humanité. Alors qu'un combat apocalyptique se prépare, Godzilla, seul prétendant au titre capable de rivaliser avec l'Alpha, aidé des humains, devra s'imposer et ainsi affirmer sa place en tant que roi des monstres.

The film is set in Moscow not long after the October Revolution where a complaining stray dog looks for food and shelter. A well-off well-known surgeon Phillip Phillippovich Preobrazhensky happens to need a dog and lures the animal to his big home annex practice with a piece of sausage. The dog is named Sharik and well taken care of by the doctor's maids, but still wonders why he's there. He finds out too late he's needed as a test animal: the doctor implants a pituitary gland and testicles of a recently deceased alcoholic and petty criminal Klim Chugunkin into Sharik. Sharik proceeds to become more and more human during the next days. After his transition to human is complete, it turns out that he inherited all the negative traits of the donor - bad manners, aggressiveness, use of profanity, heavy drinking - but still hates cats. He picks for himself an absurd name Poligraf Poligrafovich Sharikov, starts working at the "Moscow Cleansing Department responsible for eliminating vagrant quadrupeds (cats, etc.)" and associating with revolutionaries, who plot to drive Preobrazhensky out of his big apartment. Eventually he turns the life in the professor's house into a nightmare by stealing money, breaking his furniture, a water ballet during a cat chase and blackmailing into marriage a girl he met at the cinema. The professor with his assistant are then urged to reverse the procedure. Sharikov turns back into a dog. As Sharik he does remember little about what has happened to him but isn't much concerned about that. To his content he is left to live in the professor's apartment.

In 1954, a nuclear bomb is detonated at the moment a giant creature emerges from the ocean. In 1999, Project Monarch scientists Ishiro Serizawa and Vivienne Graham investigate a colossal skeleton unearthed in a collapsed mine in the Philippines. They find two spores; one dormant and one hatched that made a trail into the sea. In Japan, the Janjira Nuclear Power Plant experiences unusual seismic activity and Supervisor Joe Brody sends his wife Sandra and a team of technicians into the reactor. A tremor breaches the reactor, leaving Sandra and her team unable to escape while the plant collapses.
