Steamboat Round the Bend is a 1935 American comedy film directed by John Ford, based on the 1933 novel of the same name by author Ben Lucien Burman. The film stars Will Rogers and was released a few weeks after his death in an airplane crash.

Synopsis

A con man enters his steamboat in a winner-take-all steamboat race with a rival while attempting to find a eyewitness that will save his nephew, who has been wrongly convicted of murder, from the gallows.

In the year 1890, the honorable Judge William Priest enforces justice in an old Kentucky town. The film begins with the comedic trial of Jeff Poindexter. Jeff Poindexter, a black man, has been accused of stealing chickens. Although Judge Priest is presiding, he is reading a newspaper while Senator Horace Maydew argues the plaintiff’s case. In fact, no one, but Senator Maydew, seems to care about the case. Jeff Poindexter sleeps through Senator Maydew’s testimony. After Senator Maydew is finished with his argument, Judge Priest asks the sheriff to wake up Jeff Poindexter. When Jeff reveals he got his name from Major Randolph Poindexter, Judge Priest and the other confederate veterans in attendance become very excited. They praise Major Poindexter’s ability to lick the Yankees. While the confederate veterans reminisce over the civil war, Senator Maydew complains that such history has nothing to do with the case. Judge Priest says it is relevant because Major Poindexter would often steal Yankee chickens. Next, Jeff reveals he was only trying to fish for catfish. Judge Priest, a fishing enthusiast himself, has a discussion with Jeff about his fishing. After the trial, Jeff lives with Judge Priest.

Michael Dane part au nord du Canada rejoindre son frère, Peter, qui a trouvé de l'or avec son partenaire, Angus McKenzie. En route, Dane rencontre Estelle McDonald et tombe amoureux d'elle. Dane est soumis à la même torture lorsqu'il essaye d'aider McKenzie, accusé à tort. Ils arrivent à s'évader, et Dane doit se battre contre une meute de loups. Estelle les suit en canoë, poursuivie elle-même par Cameron McDonald, son oncle, le véritable assassin de Peter Dane. McDonald meurt après une poursuite au-dessus d'une chute d'eau, et Dane et Estelle repartent vers la civilisation.

Upon the United States entry into World War I, the first American units to arrive at the front in France are veteran Marine companies, one of which is commanded by captain Flagg, along with his Lieutenants, Moore and Aldrich. Flagg has developed a romantic relationship with the daughter of the local innkeeper, Charmaine, and resumes their relationship after returning from the front. However, he lies to her and tells her he is married when she wants to come with him on his leave to Paris. Replacements arrive and their lack of discipline and knowledge infuriate the Captain. But he is expecting the arrival of a new top sergeant, who he hopes will be able to train them properly. However, when the sergeant arrives, it is Quirt, Captain Flagg's long time rival, a rivalry which quickly re-ignites.

Lorsqu'il part pour Londres, Gertie n'a plus de nouvelles d'Eric, qui accède enfin au succès grâce à la pièce de Shakespeare. Lorsqu'Eric rentre à New York, il découvre que Juan et Gertie, toujours amoureuse de lui secrètement, vont se marier. Il est surpris avec la mariée par Juan qui le frappe et le vire de la cérémonie. Eric, dont le narcissisme a gâché l'histoire d'amour avec Gertie, finit seul.
