Synopsis
Ryotaro et Fumiko sont mariés depuis quatre ans. Ils habitent dans un quartier résidentiel de Tokyo. L'ennui et l'irritation réciproques finissent par saper l'équilibre du couple. Fumiko reproche à son mari de lire le journal à table et de sortir sans elle. Une nièce, Ayako, se réfugie chez eux car, son mariage la déçoit : son mari est alcoolique et coureur et la laisse, elle aussi, constamment seule. Pourtant, le couple finit par se réconcilier, alors que Ryotaro et Fumiko continuent de se disputer à propos d'un fait de quartier. Le lendemain, un ballon de papier envoyé dans leur jardin par des enfants, donne lieu à un échange de plus en plus ludique entre les deux époux.Actors

The story is about the interactions between Kiyoko (Hideko Takamine) and her bank clerk bachelor confidant Kenkichi (Toshiro Mifune). Kiyoko, along with her husband Shinji (Keiju Kobayashi), wants to open a coffee shop and so goes to Kenkichi to ask for a loan. Family financial and emotion troubles mount within her household, and Kiyoko falls for the handsome Kenkichi. Their entire relationship is a series of beginnings and endings with the middles cut out. It is at first purely a business association, though after Shinji (at the manipulative behest of his matchmaker mother) gives a majority of the loan to his deadbeat brother Zenichi, Kiyoko starts to think that her feelings for Kenkichi may be more than platonic.

Isamu Nakahara, un petit salarié taciturne est muté dans une succursale de sa compagnie à Tokyo. Il s'établit provisoirement avec sa femme Kikuko chez ses beaux-parents mais doivent rapidement trouver un logement car la maison est trop exiguë, d'autant que le frère de Kikuko qui tient le commerce familial va bientôt se marier et accueillir sa future femme. En désespoir de cause, n'ayant pas les moyens de s'offrir un logement en propre, ils s'établissent chez Takemura, un collègue d'Isamu qui vient de perdre sa femme. Kikuko se comporte d'une manière qu'elle juge respectueuse envers leur hôte, s'occupant de lui lorsqu'il tombe malade et lui préparant ses repas. Peu à peu, un sentiment de jalousie s'installe chez Isamu qui se renferme de plus en plus sur lui-même tandis que Takemura retrouve entrain et joie de vivre.

Fumiko Hayashi (Hideko Takamine) is a young woman can't find a decent job, meanwhile being dumped by her boyfriend and writing on the side. People say her writing on poverty is good, but she can't sell it and continues with dead end factory and bar hostess jobs and occasional heavy drinking. She gets together with another aspiring writer Fukuya (Akira Takarada) who can't sell his work either. Despite she doing all she can for him and his disease tuberculosis, he abuses her verbally and eventually physically. She walks out, comes back, walks out again. A kind man, Nobuo Sadaoka (Daisuke Katō) helps her occasionally, but she rejects his proposal. After these struggles, the film ends up with her literary success.
