Swati Mutyam (English: A White Pearl) was a 1986 Telugu Drama Film written and directed by K. Viswanath. The film stars Kamal Haasan and Raadhika in the lead roles. The movie won accolades at Asia Pacific Film Festival in both "Best Film" and "Best Actor" categories. The movie was later dubbed into Tamil as "Sippikul Muthu". Upon its success, the movie was later remade in Hindi as Eeshwar and in Kannada as Swathi Muthu.

This movie shows the plight of a young widow who was rescued by an innocent and good natured person. The film was sent by India as its official entry for the Best Foreign Language Film for the Academy Awards in 1986, but was not nominated. The film was a musical blockbuster with soundtrack composed by Ilaiyaraaja including a Harikatha disposition. The film had a silver jubilee run in all major centers of Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu and Karnataka.

Synopsis

Shivaiah (Kamal Haasan), an orphan and a mentally retarded person, lives along with his grandmother (Nirmalamma) in a village. In that village Lalitha (Raadhika), an young widow with a 5-year old son, lives along with her brother's family. She and her son often get abused by her sister-in-law but Lalitha, having no where to go bears it all.

The film starts with a shabby old man living as a recluse near a famous temple. When he ventures out into the village, he is beaten by the shepherds who believes that he is a thief. When they hand him over to the police, the officer in charge identifies him as a once-famous musician, Anantha Rama Sharma (Mammooty), hailed as Sangeeta Samrat (Emperor of music), who has been missing for four years. The inspector RadhaKrishna (Achyuth) informs his aunt (Raadhika Sarathkumar), who teaches music in his native village, of this and the past of Anantha Sharma is narrated through flashback.

Bhagyalakshmi (Sridevi) has a car accident while returning from a party and is hospitalised with severe head injuries. When she recovers, she is diagnosed with retrograde amnesia and she fails to recognise her own parents. She mentally regresses to the state of a child. Louise, jeune veuve arboricultrice de la Drôme en difficultés financières, heurte dans un accident de voiture un homme qui marche sur un chemin de terre. Par ailleurs, ses compétences scientifiques et techniques la sauvent à plusieurs reprises de la ruine. Elle hésite longuement à l'accepter dans sa vie.

In a flashback, a single mother, Corrine Morgan-Thomas (Mary-Louise Parker) drives her seven-year-old twin boys Steven (Jake Cherry) and Philip (Jeremy Shada) to the doctor's office and learns that they have autism. Philip simply repeats what he hears others say, a condition known as echolalia, while Steven is completely nonverbal. After leaving the clinic in a very upset mood, she takes the boys shopping for groceries. Her visit to the supermarket is not a pleasant one, as her two boys begin screaming throughout the store and Steven wets himself, causing others to stare at them. Upon learning about their condition, her live-in boyfriend leaves because he knows raising twins with a mental disability will be difficult.
