Thai Maaman (Tamil: Thai Maaman) is a 1994 Indian Tamil film starring Sathyaraj, Meena, Goundamani and Manivannan in prominent roles. The film was well advertised in the Sun TV Network and succeeded at the box office, prompting the same team of Sathyaraj and Guru Dhanapal to associate with in their next venture Maaman Magal which got released in 1995.

Synopsis

Rasappan (Sathyaraj) is a useless fellow who loves his sister's daughter Meena (Meena), a graduate girl. Their parents decide to engage them but Meena refuses to marry with a jobless groom. Rasappan challenges them to find a decent job. His uncle (Goundamani) advises him to become a MLA. Rasappan joins Paramasivan's party, Pramasivan (Manivannan) is convinced by his motivation. Meanwhile, villagers dissatisfied of Paramasivan politics, they encourage Velusamy (Vijayakumar) to contend at the MLA election. During the election, Rasappan asks the electors to vote for Velusamy and Rasappan wins it widely. Rasappan becomes an honest MLA and helps his village people, he convinces the villagers to deposit their money in a new bank. The bank manager, Paramasivan's relative, scams Rasappan and the villagers. Rasappan is immediately sent in jail because of Paramasivan's plan. Villagers burn Rasappan's house and steal his properties. Velusamy releases him, Rasappan retrieves the money, gives it back to the villagers and then sends Paramasivan and his partner to jail. Then rasappan goes to chennai to resign as MLA, but The Chief Minister [MN Mambiyar] congratulates Rasappan for his honesty and promotes him as Minister for public works. Back to his village, Paramasivan's henchmen attempt to kill but they fail. Meena accepts to get married with Rasappan.

The film starts with Gouthami visiting a village and remembering the past as the film takes us to a flashback. The village would have been a victim to a local don by name Baasha whose atrocities go unchecked even by police. Most of the policemen would either accept bribe or get killed by him. Sathyaraj family relocates to this village. He questions the riots happening in the village and develops enmity with the don. How he saves the village from the ruling don and his boss forms the rest of the story. In the end, Sathyaraj kills Sarathkumar and dies while hosting a flag.

Vaanavaraayan (Rajinikanth) plays the role of a feudal chieftain, adored and respected by his village people. He lives with his grandparents (M. N. Nambiar & Manorama). Following his advice, they abstain from voting in the elections and instead, pool the money given by the candidates to get themselves some basic amenities. Vallavaraayan (Napoleon) is his arch enemy. Their enmity is further sharpened when Vaanavaraayan wins the hand of Vaitheeswari (Meena), whom Vallavaraayan had also wished to wed. So Vallavaraayan convinces the priest at the temple to mix a poison in the holy water that Vaitheeswari drinks. As a result she becomes incapable of conceiving. But surprisingly, Vaitheeswari soon becomes pregnant-though she has pretended with the help of the mid-wife (S. N. Lakshmi), to do so to uphold her husband's honor. She takes poison and kills herself unable to bear the grief of being incapable of giving her husband a child and on her deathbed makes Vaanavarayan swear to take Ponni (Aishwariya) as his wife. Vaanavarayan however refuses until Ponni agrees to marry Sembattai (Thalapathi Dinesh)- Vallavarayan's hechman-who abandons her to Vallavarayan's vice. Infuriated Vaanavarayam attacks Vallavarayam and spares his life after giving him a sermon on how to win the heart of people.
