The film stars Ambareesh and Upendra in the lead roles along with Laila, Sakshi Shivanand and Ashish Vidyarthi in other prominent roles. The film had a musical score and soundtrack composed by S. A. Rajkumar.
The film is a remake of Tamil blockbuster film Thevar Magan (1992) directed by Bharathan and starred Sivaji Ganesan and Kamal Hassan. There was also a Hindi version of the film released in 1997 as Virasat.
The film released to generally average reviews from critics and was one of the sleeper hits of the year 2006.

Dhil is the story about Kanagavel (Vikram) whose only dream is to become a police officer. He succeeds in passing the exams and wins a girlfriend, Asha (Laila). One night after having dinner at a restaurant near the beach Velu goes to pay the bill leaving Asha behind. At that moment a corrupt police officer Shankar (Ashish Vidyarti) drinks and behaves indecently to Asha. He then attempts to assault her but is beaten up by Velu severely and receives a scar on his face. Angered by this he seeks revenge against Velu. The rest of the story shows how Velu fights Shankar and his goons finally killing the corrupt policeman.

The film's plot revolves around Kanthaswamy (Vikram), who is an Income Tax officer in the CBI, and his friends, granting the wishes of the needy who write letters to a local Lord Muruga temple by disguising himself as an anthropomorphic rooster. During a CBI income tax raid, he discovers a stash of black money owned by Ponnusamy (Ashish Vidyarthi), a rich and corrupted entrepreneur. Ponnusamy pretends to be paralysed to escape the questioning. Angered by the news that her father is paralysed, Ponnusamy's daughter, Subbulakshmi (Shriya Saran) goes after Kanthaswamy to seek revenge by pretending to be in love with him. Kanthaswamy, knowing Subbulakshmi's real intentions plays along in the game. This forms a cat and mouse chase between the two. In a comical role, Thengakadai Thenappan (Vadivelu) is also sought after by a local police inspector who tries to solve the mystery of "Lord Muruga saving the people". The fate of Kanthaswamy's disguise leads into the climax of the story. The local police inspector was able to bring out the truth that a CBI is involved in the role behind the secret work of helping the needy people although he was not able to confirm it. Kanthaswamy finds the password of Subbulakshmi's family bank account, in which the black money is illegally saved. He tricks Subbulakshmi into revealing the password and answers for the security questions indirectly. Kanthaswamy finally transfers the money to his account which would be used for helping the poor and needy people. Ironically, in the end, Subbulakshmi's father was paralysed at the end knowing that the password which was used by him to access his black money was changed. After that Subbulakshmi and Kanthaswamy were married and were living in northern India. Kanthaswamy saw some letters tied to a tree, just like the ones at the Lord Muruga temple. He reads one and puts it into his pocket with a secret smile, which meant he will pursue being the anthropomorphic rooster again.

The story follows a tug of war between two underworld gangs trying to outsmart each other. Vetrivel aka Velu (Vijay) is a car racer who lives with his large family in Chennai. His father, Singamuthu (Manivannan), had gone to Kadapa in Andhra Pradesh to work at a colliery and never returned, prompting Velu and his family to think that he is dead. Velu comes to know that a Malaysia-based don named Koccha (Suman) owes his father a huge sum of money. Velu and his friend Pons (Vivek) travel to Malaysia as Kuruvi, the trade jargon for low-level contraband carriers. They come to Malaysia at a time when internal rivalry and problems are surfacing in Koccha's family. Koccha's younger sister Devi (Trisha Krishnan) has refused to marry Soori (Pawan), the brother of Konda Reddy (Ashish Vidyarthi), Koccha's Kadapa-based business associate, as per Koccha's wishes. Irritated and preoccupied, neither Koccha nor his henchmen want to devote any time or attention to resolve Velu's problem. Velu is ill-treated and thrown out of Koccha's place without any help rendered. Determined to return to India only after his father's issue is solved to his satisfaction, Velu conceals himself in Koccha's palace-like residence. He soon finds out about a large diamond owned by Koccha and steals it, feeling that it would pay off his father's debt, and returns to India with Pons. Devi also follows Velu to India, having fallen in love with him.

Vamsi (Gopichand) is the son of an affluent handloom house owner Muddu Krishna Rao (Paruchuri Venkateshwara Rao). He happens to fall in love with a girl Bujji (Bhavana) who is an orphan and stays in a hostel. With the consent of his parents, Vamsi tries to get engaged with Bujji. But she was kidnapped by a group of gangsters. Bujji is attempted to molest by one of gangster brother (Ajay) who is roughed up by Vamsi. The gangster (Ashish Vidyarthi) vows to take revenge and on the day of Gopichand marriage with Bujji. He kidnaps and rapes her in front of the hero. All this mishap happens because of support of MLA {Rajiv Kanakala} who is the close friend of Vamsi as he is promised with minister berth by the gangster and stabs Vamsi. Vamsi arrives Hyderabad and tries to trace the gangsters. Because of his betrayal, Vamsi kills his MLA friend Raghava (Rajiv Kanakala). Later in the movie, Sayaji Shinde interviews Vamsi's parents and family members because Vamsi is in a state of hallucination and he didn't know until he told him. The cop Syyaji Shinde investigates the case though at the end he catches the hero but releases him and gives his support for killing gangsters. The hero kills Lal Mahankali (Asish Vidyarthi) and rips his brother's arm off. Vamsi's dad tells him that Bujji dies the day of the engagement because she jumped off a rock building.
