The film's story line is set in 1944, during World War II, and is about a Jewish Hungarian industrialist who, in order to ensure his large family's safe passage out of the Third Reich, is forced to hand over his business and his enormously valuable possessions to the Nazis. The plot is loosely based on the life events of Hungarian Jewish industrialist Manfred Weiss and his Manfréd Weiss Steel and Metal Works.
Synopsis
Joseph Krauzenberg (Martin Landau) is a very wealthy Hungarian Jewish industrial tycoon whose fortune is mirrored in the great palaces he owns. However, by 1944 his important businesses are needed by the Nazis and Hitler's 'Final Solution' is sweeping through Europe.Actors

After the Battle of Pharsalus where Julius Caesar (Rex Harrison) has defeated Pompey, Pompey flees to Egypt, hoping to enlist the support of the young Pharaoh Ptolemy XIII (Richard O'Sullivan) and his sister Cleopatra (Elizabeth Taylor). The Romans hold, and the armies of Mithridates arrive on Egyptian soil. The following day, Caesar passes judgment. He sentences Ptolemy's lord chamberlain to death for arranging an assassination attempt on Cleopatra. Cleopatra is crowned Queen of Egypt. She dreams of ruling the world with Caesar. Le film raconte l’histoire d'Olga Benário Prestes (Camila Morgado). Née à Munich en Allemagne en 1908 de parents juifs. Olga devient une militante communiste. Après avoir libéré son amoureux Otto Braun de prison, ils sont forcés de fuir vers l’Union soviétique, pays dans lequel ils reçoivent un entraînement de guérilla. Olga se distingue très vite parmi les membres du Parti communiste de l'Union soviétique où elle connaît Luís Carlos Prestes (Caco Ciocler), qui deviendra l’un des principaux chefs communistes du Brésil. En 1934, quand Luís Carlos Prestes retourne au Brésil, désigné par l'Internacional Communista (le Mouvement communiste international) pour diriger une révolution armée, Olga est désignée pour l’escorter. Bien sûr, pour survivre, ils doivent se cacher et vivre en clandestins tout en s’organisant pour déstabiliser le gouvernement de Getúlio Vargas (Osmar Prado). Pendant cette période, la relation amoureuse entre Olga et Prestes s’affirme et elle tombe enceinte en 1935.

Jo Weisman, a young Jewish Parisian, and his family are taken by the Nazis and Vichy collaborators in the rafle du Vel' d'Hiv. Paris, January 1942. France is occupied by the Nazis. Robert Klein, apparently apolitical, is a well-to-do art dealer, Roman Catholic and Alsatian by birth, who takes advantage of French Jews who need to sell artworks to raise cash to leave the country. One day, the local Jewish newspaper, addressed to him, is delivered to his home. He learns that another Robert Klein who has been living in Paris, a Jew sought by the police, has had his mail forwarded to him in an apparent attempt to destroy his social reputation and make him a target of official anti-Semitism. He reports this to the police who remain suspicious that he may be reporting this scheme to disguise his own true identity. His own investigations lead him in contradictory directions, to Klein who lives in a slum while having an affair with his concierge and to Klein who visits a palatial country estate where he has seduced an apparently Jewish married woman. When the art dealer cannot locate the other Klein, authorities require him to offer proof of his French heritage. While waiting for the documentation to arrive, he struggles to track down his namesake and learn his motivation. Before he can resolve the situation by either means, he is caught up in the July 1942 roundup of Parisian Jews. He is reunited with Jews who once were his clients as they board boxcars for Germany.
