Synopsis
In this gentle, tragic drama, Olivier (John McEnery) is a wealthy young man. He spends his time building a boat on the lawn with his friend David (Jean-Pierre Cassel), a poor fisherman whom he grew up with. Though hardly idyllic, the relative calm provided by their friendship is disrupted by Eleonore (Claude Jade), a cute and determined young woman who sets her sights on David. She wants to wean David from his friendship with Olivier and plays on David's long-dormant jealousy of Olivier's wealth and easy life. Eleonore also plays the flipside of the jealousy issue, claiming that Olivier has made passes at her.Actors

The film is a 20th-century adaptation of Voltaire's 1759 social satire novel Candide, ou l’Optimisme. Set in the World War II-era, it follows the adventures of Candide, an orphaned Westphalian brought up in a baron's chalet. He falls in love with the baron's daughter, Cunégonde, and is thrown out of the house when the baron discovers them kissing. When war breaks out in 1939, Candide is drafted and then captured by the Nazis, but escapes and joins the International Red Cross. Candide's improbable adventures take him into a concentration camp to rescue his tutor, Pangloss; then he is off to South America (where he endures a series of revolutions), Borneo (where he is imprisoned by a primitive tribe), Moscow (where he accidentally foments a missile crisis between the Soviet Union and the United States), and New York (where he gets mixed up in a racial clash). Finally, back in France, he retires to a country house with Cunégonde, Pangloss, and a mysterious lady who saved him from a firing squad, and settles down to write his memoirs.

There are many continuations from The 400 Blows; discharged from the army as unfit, Antoine Doinel seeks out his sweetheart, violinist Christine Darbon. He has written to her voluminously (but, she says, not always nicely) while in the military. Their relationship is tentative and unresolved. Christine is away skiing with friends when Antoine arrives, and her parents must entertain him themselves, though glad to see him. After she learns that Antoine has returned from military service, Christine goes to greet him at his new job as a hotel night clerk. It is a promising sign that perhaps this time, the romance will turn out happily for Antoine. He is, however, quickly fired from the hotel job. Counting the army, Antoine loses three jobs in the film, and is clearly destined to lose a fourth, all symbolic of his general difficulty with finding his identity and "fitting in".

En mars 1994, c'est la semaine de la mode de Paris, avec le grand et le petit mondes qui gravitent autour. Tandis que la reporter Kitty Potter enchaîne les interview des stars de la mode, Olivier de la Fontaine, le président du syndicat du prêt-à-porter se retrouve dans une voiture de maître avec Sergio, un étrange personnage qui porte la même cravate que lui. Olivier meurt brusquement alors que la voiture est prise dans un embouteillage sur le pont Alexandre-III. Sergio s'enfuit en plongeant dans la Seine. Ni Isabelle, la veuve d'Olivier, ni Simone Lowenthal, dite Simone Lo, ne semblent regretter la mort d'Olivier sur laquelle enquêtent les inspecteurs Tantpis et Forget. Joe Flynn, reporter sportif qui allait quitter son hôtel, est prié par son journal d’enquêter sur ce mystérieux décès, mais au moment où il veut reprendre sa chambre, celle-ci vient d'être attribuée à l’énigmatique Anne Eisenhower qui a perdu ses bagages à Roissy.

Ce n'est qu'à la fin du film que l'on découvre les vraies raisons de l'attitude manipulatrice de Fabre.
